I went to Green Day at Spark Area night and was just wondering if anybody else did and tested their new high density WiFi deployment there. I suspect very few people would have known about it and therefore expected minimal usage. 

 

For those who don't know it's a new Huawei deployment in there that's 100% 5GHz only. I spent quite some time testing this and while speeds were fine (it was delivering the 30/10 it's been rate limited to) the service seemed to fairly regularly drop out and didn't seem to support any form of roaming between AP's resulting it drops and having to manually reconnect as you moved around inside the arena.

My phone connected fine to the Spark Arena WiFi SSID but I didn't get any internet through it. Expected a captive portal but nothing loaded at all. Tried the Spark WiFi SSID and got to the login page for that.

Spark customer tho?

There are two SSID's in use - Spark WiFi for Spark customers, and Spark Arena for all others that asks for a name and phone number in the captive portal to continue.

Free wifi thats actually free and not a dangled carrot? crikey. Figured the naming would just perk their own customers.

Well 2.4G is pretty much buggered. So if you want to set the standard and know it won't leak too far outside the building so you won't have leeches sitting outside the Arena in their cars then 5G it is.

oh i totally agree with the concept, just a strong line to draw in the sand to those with, uh, cheaper phones.
