I'm not sure how relevant this is, but I recently received this error message after trying to email an xtra user (email addrss has been changed, obviously):

 

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

 

 

 

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

 

 

 

  mxxxxxxxx@xtra.co.nz

 

    all hosts for 'xtra.co.nz' have been failing for a long time (and retry time not reached)

 

I re-sent the message today and it seems to have been sent OK this time.

Something is (or was?) broken. I've seen reports on Facebook over the last few days where grumpy Spark customers have been unable to access their email via webmail. I normally use the Thunderbird email client in preference to webmail, and hadn't noticed any issues connecting.

People are expecting too much from their FREE email service

If you really want professional level spam filtering , there are other, paid options .

 

And as allways, its a compromise.
The more stringent the spam filter, the more 'legit' email that will be blocked .
Dont expect a 100% block rate. Some spam/scams will allways get through .

4 kiwibanks from another .edu

 

Not long got home to find two of them, duly reported to Spamcop, Knujon and assorted other reporting agencies.

 

Kiwibank has the email address suspicious.email [at] kiwibank.co.nz listed as a place to report them, assuming that you don't run into a brick wall with SMX's filters..

And we could call that true if it weren't for the fact the even bigger service of gmail appears to manage it, also free. And doesn't claim a 99.9999% accuracy that the enterprise system does.

so if your FREE email service doesnt live up to expectations, move to another product.

google has pretty deep pockets , they can spend whatever it takes . On the other hand, you really dont have that much
control over googles FREE spam filter . Want a Pro level service, often need to pay .

 

I still think its unreasonable to expect 100% spam filtering (without too many false positives) . Just accept some spam will allways get through. Even with gmail and the paid Spam filtering services , some spam does get through .

claims of 99.9999% , well who really believed that. :-)

 

Spam does get through to my gmail a/c btw . often.  No biggie, I just del it.

It's open season day again with another 3 in quick succession.

 

Guessing by the 2nd one where they have an identity crisis we can expect some App|e ones shortly (2 from same address and looks like just spelling it with |s instead of L/I)

I had another phishing one allegedly from Kiwibank, but from yet another .edu domain in the "From" address. I usually flick copies to Spamcop, knujon, suspicious.meail[at]kiwibank.co.nz, complaint[at]spam.govt.nz, and emailsupport[at]smxemail.com, which can be tricky if the outbound filters decide that the spam should be blocked. The easiest workaround I'm aware of for most Xtra users is to have a "free" account (Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, etc) that can be used for outgoing mail.

To clarify.. I well migrated some years back, but there's still the odd one throughout the year that reminds me I didn't change or legacy pal with it on file. Only reason It's still polled

 

Just seems odd to be 99% quiet most the time then get bombarded with 5+ a day from as you say, kiwibank or Netflix/Apple/Paypal that are quite identifiable.

Yep I had 3 as well. All similar layout and variation on same theme, all from similar addresses (one number variation [012 & 013]) suffix's. 1 x PayPal and 2 x Netflix. I Spamed them and Blacklisted them on the xtra mail webserver.

 

Again I must point out in nearly 30 years of using email (tig.com.au, ihug.com.au, iinet.com.au xtra/yahoo.co.nz) I have never received SOOO much Spam or phishing emails as I am now getting with this new xtra email system.

Should I do that in addition to discussing it with Spark? I've been DMing them on Twitter about it and they said to send examples of the spam to them.

 

 

I've discussed this with Spark via FB, as well as family chit-chat that is misclassified as spam by the outgoing server. I didn't want to send them personal family discussions, so that was a no-go for me.

 

Using Thunderbird, I forward copies of spam that has been missed to emailsupport[at]smxemail.com as an attachment with an explanatory note. Note: the outgoing server for Xtra accounts often refuses to accept the forwarded email on the basis that it's spam. When this happens, I go back to the unsent message, and send it from another account (Gmail/Yahoo/Outlook etc) that doesn't go through SMX.

As long as you realise the DIA are only interested in the commerical unsolicited mail act 2007. Not phishing. So yours are likely getting binned anyway.

 

They only action the advertorial type

 

Although there are many forms of communication that can be considered spam, the Act is only concerned only with unsolicited electronic messages that are commercial in nature.

 

External notification by means of hosting/domain abuse is the way. And that'd be spamcop. Of which I've begun to myself. Had a bout of them all from the same VPS IP despite masked domain sources.

I have be pestered over the last week with Spam in my Xtra Email

 

I have set up filtering and noticed that spam was still getting through

 

The filters don't seem to read inside HTML content e.g.

 

 

 

Filter is set for - Content containing sereduc

 

 

 

Email arrives with hyperlink embedded

 

You may unsubscribe at any time. Unsubscribe

 

View source shows

The Email was not trapped (multiple times)

 

 

 

Am I missing something ?

 

I would like to get rid of these as there is a common theme about the emails
