I just called telecom and foun out something very interesting, the full speed upload speeds are not going to be fully functional until the 16th of this month. The telecom tech said that if they have to change the speeds over a period of time otherwise if they did it all at once it would crash the network.

joker97: can anybody post some 'adsl 2' speeds? wanna know if you can actually get anywhere close to 24mbps and what the uploads do ... Laughing

The speeds I quoted above are off the St Albans exchange, which is ADSL2+ enabled. At the moment I'm using a D-Link G604T (the wireless Telecom-supplied one) which says in the router config its using a ADSL2+ profile, but according to the Telecom website these routers purchased before Oct 2007 (which mine was) don't support ADSL2+. So I'm a bit confused as to whether I could actually acheieve a higher speed or not.

The story with the older D-link routers (generation 1) is that they will connect using the ADSL2+ modulation, but the sync speed is limited to 7600kb/s approx. There was also talk on this forum that Telecom (not D-link, I guess they have lost interest in the Gen1 routers) were developing upgraded firmware to enable the older routers to go at true ADSL2+ speeds, but that idea may have been dropped? Hope not.

Otherwise, you and I will have to buy a Gen2 D-Link router. I have a 504T Gen1.

looks like trouble follows me
Yahoo.co.nz / answers.yahoo.com / mail.yahoo.com all don't work for me... Is it me, telecom, or yahoo?

Interesting. I've just been looking at the DLink NZ/Aus website and they do have a firmware update for the DSL-G604T to enable it for ADSL2+, however not for Xtra-supplied ones. I'm guessing that flashing it with the new firmware will still work, it will just take off the Xtra GUI and possibly not be supported by them any longer. I think I'm willing to take the risk.

I am happy with my upgrade in plan size , as i am not able to get adsl 2 i have not noticed a speed increase as i already was on a full up / down plan , but on the flip side also have no hiccups with speed or connection either :)

Hmmm.... doesn't seem to want to work. As soon as I start to upgrade it comes back at me with an error and continues with the existing firmware.

There's something that I don't quite get. How come business plans are cheaper than residential plans with the same data limit? They're the same price to start off with, but are cheaper for overages. Is there some sort of difference between the two plans?

Like if I were to choose between the residential Pro plan and the business Intermediate plan, would I be better of getting the business Intermediate plan or is there some drawback to this that I don't know of because they appear to be the same in terms of data limit and speed?

P.S: I live in Albany which doesn't get ADSL2+ until 2011 if that makes any difference.

But business plans have an overage of $3.56/GB, while the residential plans are 2c per MB which works out to $20/GB.

Why is there a difference in prices when they're the same in speed and data limits?

Business plans have:
  • free static IP
  • free wireless ADSL router
  • business helpdesk support
Better off really for that little extra (but there is a 24 month contract)

So business plans are cheaper and better? I don't get how that works, so I'm a bit skeptical, but I'll take it if so.

They exclude G.S.T. by the way, so multiply the prices by 1.125.

Indeedy. So it works out to $4 per GB, 5 times less than the residential =D
