Just applied for a plan change to Explorer plan with 10 GB each month, F/S F/S and ADSL2+. I have a D-Link G604T which I have 'taken the chance' and updated to the newest D-Link Firmware.

I'm just waiting for Telecom to go through with the change and I'll report back to you guys.

My exchange is ADSL2+ compatible, I feel bad for sexymonkey, 2011? Harsh.

sexymonkeys: But business plans have an overage of $3.56/GB, while the residential plans are 2c per MB which works out to $20/GB.

Why is there a difference in prices when they're the same in speed and data limits?

Not sure if you are looking at the wrong list, but the business plans are not the same price for same data.

The resi Pro plan is 79.95 (Inc GST)   for 40GB, FS/FS and $20/GB overage

The bus intermediate plan is  89.95  (inc GST) for 40GB, FS/FS but with $4/GB overage  (and a different modem, priority call centre)

For a normal customer that uses around 40GB you would be better of with Pro if you think you will rarely go over your datacap, but if you will go over it by more than a GB every few months then go for the business plan becuase the overage will be cheaper

does anyone have any insight as to why Telecom don't do as other ISP's do and offer purchasable "extra" blocks, rather than overage? ie. $10 for 5gb extra etc

Customer demand?  Or lack thereof?

Just interested to know why you'd want a "bump pack" when you could do a change plan?  Is it just hassle?

Oh and I was going to say something about D-Link modems.

The G604T Generation I modems will (apprently) do ADSL2+ - even the very early ones, but you have to do a 2-stage firmware update for the earliest ones.  The details are all on the D-Link website.  Basically anthing v2.0 should do DSL2+

The other D-Link 'T' model modems will do ADSL2+.  Go to xtra.co.nz/firmware for the appropriate updates where required.  If you can't find the firmware there, call the BB helpdesk ....

I have a 604T at home and about to have it replaced (under warantee! :) and I get a Thompson to replace it! :)) because I was having all sorts of disconnection (low connect rate - down to 64k and no dsl for hours on end) issues.  I've also got a 2Wire sitting at home too, and when I try that on the same line it works perfectly.  I've tried upgrading the firmware (on the 604) to no avail.  Anyone have any similar issues with the 604T?  It was working fine on my line for 3 months (ie from when I moved in).

you can simply change plans instead.  you can keep doing this until you get to the 60GB plan.

If you use more data than that, then it costs $3 per GB, which is pretty reasonable.

Possibly also has something to do with the billing system they use.
For a large org like Telecom introducing something seemingly as simple as bolt on data packages could very well involve millions of dollars in system changes.

I'm currently on Orcon, but I want to change to Telecom's new plans. My dad insists that I have to notify Orcon that I'm changing ISP first, but I'm pretty sure the last time we did that we had to pay more to change over.

If I want to change ISP do I alert my current ISP before doing so? Or do I leave it up to Telecom?

You shouldn't need to talk to Orcon as the process is mainly done behind the scenes.

But soon after Telecom connects you, check with Orcon to make sure the services at their side have been turned off and your account closed to make sure you don't run up some unnecessary bills.

I have a G604T, of which bricked itself a month or so ago (a couple of weeks after I got it) however, on a whim I decided to try and start it up a few days ago, and voila! It magically works again. I also updated the firmware to D-Link V3.

And, I've now been switch over from Go to Explorer, and I'm not really that happy. I'm getting the same download speed of 3.7 MB, though my upload is over 600kb/s now. My exchange is ADSL2+, so, nushfhsd. I am however happy with the increase from 3 to 10GB of data. I still find it odd though, considering my modem is reporting a downstream data rate of 16373 kbs.

I was on the Go Large plan . I have swapped over  to the 40gig  plan and what a difference in performance.
On Go Large I was struggling to get above 1500 KB/s download speed. On the new plan I am topping 10,000kb/s
On the Go Large watching streaming video was like watching a series of still shots . This morning I watched the Keynote launch of the new Apple notebooks which isavailable on the Apple site to stream in HD . It came through great and looked awesome.
So this is one happy Telecom customer

What do you mean the modem 'bricked' itself?  You couldn't ping it or access the web interface?

Just an update on my G604T issue -> I got my hands on a 2Wire router (the one Telecom are selling to its business customers) and I have to say that modem is brilliant.  I had the occasional disconnect (where it dropped DSL), but rock solid sync rates.  Seeing as that one seemed to work fine, I rang up and got the helpdesk to send me a new modem to replace the 604 as it was under warrantee.  They sent me their new Thompson one.  The Thompson one worked better than D-Link, but I was still losing DSL sometimes and only getting 300kbit connect rate (better than the 64k I was getting on the D-Link), but a far cry from the 2.5meg I usually get.  I got Telecom to send a tech out again to look at the line - and they've done something to it - hopefully fixed it!

Conclusion: That 2Wire modem is one solid piece of kit.  Pitty it's not mine and I have to give it back ....

What site are you trying to get to?  Or is it just torrenting?  What do you get on speedtest.net?
