Hi,

Lately I've been having problems with Telecom's transparent proxies. I sent away a static IP request asking not to be on any of Telecom's transparent proxies, however, it failed the Lagado cache test and according to a google search, the same IP range I'm under (222.154.x.x) is involved with 1.1 AKmdrL2CacheBC4.telecom.co.nz. Has telecom stuffed up my staic IP request?

I think Telecom have a proxy bypass list for individual ip addresses, I would assume your ip address was or is on the bypass list.

What problem are you having?

Have you logged the problem with Telecom?  

I find that if you use the email form http://telecom.custhelp.com/app/ask your query will often get picked up by a local staff rather than the overseas phone answerers like when you go via the phone help desk.

I had logged the problem with Telecom previously when I was on another bluecoat proxy and they told me to go to telecom.co.nz/staticip. That's what I did and under the 'additional information' bit I wrote that it must not be on the transparent proxy.

Problems I'm having are low speeds to all filelocker sites, they'd all download at about 100kbps except for Megaupload when I switch to port 1723 where speeds would jump to 700kbps.

How can I check if I'm on the bypass list? I suspect I'm not if the Lagado cache test failed.

Have you logged a job since you had your static IP? We cannot help with issues if we're not made aware. If you ring 123 they'll be able to help you out.

I sent an email to staticip@telecom.co.nz, they said they had actioned on the request at about 9:30am this morning but still nothing.

Can you PM me or Akia the Ref # you would have got when you requested this under the /staticip and we can look into this for you.

Do you have a static ip? everything was fine for me before my static ip was setup (no transparent proxies) and I know other telecom users without static ips that are fine also.

Seems ridiculous, but it seems my only option may be to cancel my static ip.

i dont have an assigned static IP as such, but the IP i got hasnt changed in for about a yr now.. i wnna get off the damn proxy :(

Thats even weirder. Maybe telecom are just selectively adding high traffic users to their proxy lists. That would make more sense to me then static vs dynamic.

I did speak to one guy at Telecom who seemed to have heard of the bypass list. However, he wanted me to test something when I got home and I couldn't get a hold of him again. He sounded like a local not a overseas outsourced support person which may be the difference.

well the reason i want to get off it is it slows downloads down to many different locations when before this proxy rubbish they were great. To get any sort of real speed out of my connection i find myself having to use a VPN. Which imo is pretty sad.

Due to this i am seriously considering moving to another ISP after being with Telecom/Xtra since 1996

I would be.  It seems to me that what you're asking for really is outside of the scope of what Telecom's core business is.

Someone like Orcon, who have network designers visible in this space, and are a fraction of the size and have access to (from what I can tell) is a much better peered network, really does seem to be what you're looking for.

Now to balance that comment... good luck finding an Orcon store in eastern Christchurch that you can just drop into with your modem and ask someone to just explain what all those stupid holes are actually for.

what mite telecom's core business be? providing crappy service for cheap?

i had no issues with Telecom broadband before all this proxy crap was added. i would always tell my friends to join up with telecom as they were the fastest/best in my mind, but now im having to tell people to go with vodafone/slingshot etc :(

I am considering moving because of this also. The fact that no one had a even the slightest clue what I was talking about when I called 123 (with one exception) is appalling. I would like to think that the local support teams are a lot better than the outsourced overseas teams I have encountered over the past few days, but I am not so sure.

I am near certain there is someone in NZ administering this system nicely sheltered by the ignorance of these support teams and most likely blissfully unaware of our situations.

btw, my DNS service is incompatible with these transparent proxies, so that is the reason for the fuss.

The support person, whom I mentioned above, acknowledged that there was a proxy bypass list and also a no DNS cache list, so it seem the capacity is there, it just seems more like the appropriate information isn't being shared with the frontline support.
