This might have come up before... but it would be super helpful to see a "location" displayed under usernames in the side user box.

Make it a mandatory field to fill in on sign-up, but just make it an open text box so users who don't want to disclose don't have to. And then those that do could just give region, or city, or whatever they want.

Seems to be a super common question... "where are you located"

Just a thought!

It has come up many times seems to be pretty well supported idea, and it's always the same reason as above.

It doesn't have to be mandatory, IMO not allowing users to put up their location because is stalkers is on the over protective side.

It's a non-issue on plenty of other NZ and overseas based forums.

Understand the stalker angle, it's why I think it should just be an "open" text field - but that must be filled in. I for instance would have no issue sticking "Palmerston North" under my name, but other may just choose to put "My house".

Again, just a thought!

We had it on a 4WD forum I used to use lots in the past. Was dead handy when people were looking for parts, mechanics etc.
Same applies for this forum when people are looking for parts or cabling techs, IT contractors, ISP recommendations all that.

Sounds like it won't be a thing. All good!

I notice that when making location-centric posts (e.g. buy/sell, local issues) people mention the name of the relevant suburb but not what city it's in. That gets annoying for people who are not familiar with the area.

I remember one where the person simply said "George St". So, is that George St in Ashburton, Auckland, Balclutha, Blenheim, Bulls, Christchurch, Clinton, Dannevirke, Dipton, Dunedin, Edendale, Eltham, Geraldine, Gisborne, Gore, Hamilton, Hawera, Hikurangi, Hunterville, Invercargill, Levin, Lower Hutt, Masterton, Matamata, Milton, Morrinsville, Murchison, Napier, New Plymouth, Ngaruawahia, Otautau, Paeroa, Pahiatua, Palmerston North, Papakura, Paraparaumu, Picton, Pleasant Point, Port Chalmers, Putaruru, Raetihi, Rangiora, Richmond, Riverhead, Riverton, Rolleston, Springfield, Te Aroha, Te Awamutu, Te Kuiti, Te Puke, Timaru, Tuakau, Upper Hutt, Waiheke Island, Waihi, Waimate, Waitara, Waiuku, Warkworth, Wellington, Whakatane, Whanganui or Winton?

I'd happily fill in an optional 'location' field with 'Auckland, NZ'.  Mainly for buy/sell reasons for when I forget to advise my location when selling an item.

@freitasm

A spin off to that idea would be for the buy/sell forum to have a template that must be followed.
Rather than just a text box you get a range of different fields to fill out like trademe. Also that might enable the forum itself to filter between cars/electronics etc with ease?

Technical solutions aren't always best when the easiest option is old fashioned communication.
