Does anyone else find that the news column on the left, plus the youtube column on the right, take up so much space that it squeezes the actual content of the site to be a bit too narrow? It's like Geekzone: Widescreen edition.

Doesn't *everyone* have a 32" Widescreen LCD with a zillion x trillion resolution by now?

A bit cramped sometimes on my 13.3" Macbook (1280x800).

I agree with the content squeeze. Are the YouTube videos creating revenue for Geekzone? If yes then I think it is fine to leave them up but if not I think the main focus should be on the forum posts etc.

This will get rid of the uglyness of the images and only leave "Watch the latest videos on YouTube.com"

Doesn't remove the "squeeze" but does make it let distracting

I thought having the YouTube thing on the side would be something else on the site - the number of ads is still the same.

Hmmm. Let me see:

- expenses to keep Geekzone running: $1400/month (colocation, firewall, data traffic).
- revenues from subscribers who can browse Geekzone completely ad free: $100/month.

I think ads have to be around, don't you?

Maybe jumping to the conclusion that they're ads is a bit harsh (the news links definitely don't appear to be ads), but they remind me of annoying dating-site ads more commonly found on sites with legally questionable content. This is probably helped by my adversion to Youtube because I see the videos generally as a waste of bandwidth...

But back to the squeeze:

The max resolution on this LCD is a [now] mere 1024x768, and there is currently a ~1:1 ratio of forum content to other content (including borders and spacing). No exactly ideal when I only come to read the forum content.

What size monitor are you using, and what resolution is it set at?

I don't have a problem at all with the ad's but it is taking a bit of getting used to in this format. There is a bit too much happening on the screen for my liking. I certainly prefer the old style.

Yeah, the YouTube ads are a pain and don't make for a nice experience.

I am using Geekzone on a tablet PC and my take is that this "squeeze" seems actually good on this screen. On my big notebook (15") it's better in the sense that the lines are now shorter to read - making it faster to go through discussions.

Seriously guys - if you remove the column on the right side each line extends beyond the point where you don't need to move your eyes or heads. Making it shorter means you can read more without moving.

Give it a try and post more feedback.

Yeah, I would agree with that. Having narrower lines is better IMO.

I would be interested to know if this means that posting of overwidth images is now impossible with those YouTube images on the right?

Because that often happened in the past where somebody would post a very very wide screenshot which meant you had to scroll left and right all the time to read the postings on that page of the thread.

If the YouTube images put a stop to this happening, them I'm 100% for the idea
