Hey guys,

A friend of mine has recently connected to ADSL at his place (for the first time) with Vodafone.  His modem connects with a speed of ~7000kbps but he only gets a download bandwidth of 3000kbps.  We've tried with nothing else plugged into the line except the modem, and connected via cable etc, but doesn't seem to make a difference.

Any ideas of things to try, or causes of this?  

I've attached a screenshot of the ADSL connection data - does anyone know whether this gives any clues?

Have tried a different router to make sure that wasn't the prob

We abouts approx? Sounds like he is connected to a Conklin.




Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend from $150 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

Conklin??

He's on Laws Road, Dannevirke.  ADSL has only just become available there (6 months ago)

Hi, a Conklin is a small DSLAM that can have one or two E1's as uplinks, therefore limited to 2 or 4Mb/s uplink, it sounds like one has been removed from service elsewhere (probably upgraded to an ISAM) and redeployed here.

Ok - interesting to learn something new. I guess it's only Chorus themselves that'd be able to confirm if that's the case?

Hi there,

Your friend appears to be using quite an old modem:

His attainable rate suggests he is on an ADSL2 line however his modem has sync at ADSL1 rates - unless it has been set up to do so this, it indicates the modem is quite a few years old and your friend would instantly benefit from getting a new one. (I would recommend that he gives us a call to organize a modem from us).

Outside of this, based on his attenuation I would also expect that attainable rate to be higher - the fact that it's lower than expected would point towards something not being quite right physically speaking - perhaps he doesn't have filters on all devices, or one of the filters is a tad faulty, or the house wiring is sub par.

I'd say start with this:
1. Get a new (ADSL2+) modem.
2. Use the filters that come with the modem to replace the existing house filters.

By this point you should see a good increase and hopefully will not have any more problems. If you still do then personally I would have a look at having a splitter installed, let us know how you go :)

Hi Tudorale,

Thanks for the reply.  The routers we've tried are both brand-new, ADSL2+ routers.  The first was the Vodafone Home Gateway router, the 2nd a brand new Netcomm router.

A splitter would be a good option to try.

Have just run the Chorus SAT tool, which shows it as being ADSL2+ area. But the routers were definitely connecting with G.DMT not ADSL2+

Where to from here?

How far from exchange? There could be a Conklin between exchange and his address. PM the address if you like and I'll have a sift through the cabinet list etc.

Yeah it's been covered here before, but it's not enough to just remove all other devices from their sockets to test. Without a master splitter installed your modem is exposed to the entire home wiring setup, including internal reflections from unterminated legs etc. A master splitter isolates the modem from the rest of the birds nest of wiring inside the home, effectively giving it a clean direct connection to the incoming line.

If you're already using an ADSL 2+ modem then a master splitter really should be the next step.

I would get the house wiring checked out by an expert that knows what they are doing

OK, I have the answer:
Address is 7-8Km from the exchange. You are definitely not connected to exchange with those stats and distance. I am 99% sure your are connected to cabinet DV/AB approx 1km further up the road. This is due for RBI upgrade Year 4, Q1; so July 2014 onwards. This cabinet now is 99% sure to be a Conklin, so approx less that 4Mbps is the most you will get here.

Vodafone can do a full prequel on that address to confirm 100%
