A renewal SMS is not an important/urgent SMS.

Most people who have landlines don't switch it off at night either.
Does that mean they are A-OK with somebody ringing in the middle of the night for something entirely non-urgent?  of course not. 

many people leave their phone on at night in case they need to be contacted for some urgent thing or another. maybe they have elderly relatives, family in hospital, or something like that.



I never said it was urgent... But like I said before... Why not add the number to your contacts list and set them to silent? Hardly taxing or worth whining about I would have thought...

possibly because they wouldn't have known what the number was until it happened at least once

or maybe they aren't aware such a function exists

or maybe they still want to be notified during the day with a beep, which making the contact silent would also stop.


bottom line is this shouldn't be a need to do this sort of work around. companies shouldn't be contacting people at 3am unless it is urgent period.  Good to see Vf is working on it though.

I disagree.

Would you complain if you receive an email at 3:00am? If you have a smart phone that would beep too. Are you using any of the other smart phone applications, whatsapp, skype, google chat etc? Do you silence the email and other app notifications? If so then why not do it for sms too? Its no different.
