I dont see anyone else talking about the fibre trial so ill start a thread....

So i got a call this week to trail it, i currently have naked dsl

I have signed up for the 30/10 Naked Broadband Entertain 250GB for $89*

stuff you might want to know:
I have been told that my naked broadband will be cut on a specific date and swapped the the fibre (so no wasted cross over costs)
$1 per GB for going over cap
*$30 on account discount has been applied to the price or it would have been $119
i think it was $30 more for the 100/50, which i decided i didnt really need
they ad another 100gb package for less but i generally use more than 100gb
2 Months Free Base Package and Connection as part of the promotion
12 Month Contract with $199 ETC
Free Broadband Connection
Free Homehub (i dont even know what their home hub is, i have good quality equipment so ill see if i like it prolly wont use it)
2 Months Free WarpSpeed Booster (this is on the email i got sent, i dont know what it is)

anyway i signed up as its cheaper than my current naked dsl package..... save $10 and get an extra 50gb, with 2 free months, i guess i hope that by trial they mean we are networking experts and its all going to be great :) so good deal, and the customer server was great ...

my penned in install date over the phone was the 13th (but to be confirmed by the local installer, which is corus in Dunedin so i was told)
i rang today and the 16th has been confirmed for install

i guess ill update this on the 16th if it goes live with some tests or before if anything changes.

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

yeah i have some cisco equipment, rather than hunt down the usb to serial adaptor and the terminal cable ill give the huawei a go and see what its like (like Vodafone intended me to try haha) :)
and the existing wifi will be easy to add on in sure (a unifi long range ap)

Possibly without the C but it is a Model. Similar to the HG658.

$1 per GB for going over cap
^Is there an option to be capped instead? While i hate the idea of being capped, with a high speed connection if someone had something maxing it out (good example would be malware on the network), then in theory it coud be ticking over a dollar every few minutes. I think most people prefer slow net (and then buying data packs) over bill shock.

Would love Slowed down net but TCL and Vodafone don't offer it from what I can see.

I'm waiting on Vodafone to hurry up in Dunedin myself, so I would love those specs for $119 a month

the installer didnt actually ring me to confirm (i was told the local installer would confirm within 48 hours, it never happened not even after 48 hours) so after a few days i rang vodafone to see what was happening and they said they had the confirmed date in the system.

haha i know right !! i registered my interest once upon a time on some vodafone webpage and got a random call out of the blue.... sooo ?

so short of registering your interest, i assume i did it here http://www.vodafone.co.nz/fibre-optic-broadband/ i have no idea ?

Yesterday a Downer guy called asking if he can come do a pre inspection.
He came round to find the fibre pipe at the road side, quick dig and thre it is.
Then he checked our telephone pipe to pass the fibre from the road to the house. It looked like the right size (20mm), but that was only the visible part. So I signed a civil works form for another team to come and lay a new pipe from the road to the house.
So, during the week the new pipe will be laid, with the install still scheduled for Friday.

Hi i am also enjoying being on the trial. Has been a mostly ok experience. I am using the Vodafone Home Station at present but have also had the HG659 to try. I think it helps my Netflix and Hulu and Vudu experience.

update:

so i got an email on monday afternoon with the tracking number of the home station unit. i tracked it and im glad to say it was dropped off this afternoon.
Given that im in dunedin and it was dropped off in Whangarei, makes me think that im not going to ever see it, so i called VF and they were of course sorry and they would get one out to dunedin, im not to bothered considering there seems sufficient time for it to arrive prior to monday but i guess ill see :)

ill setup the cisco unit or a pfSense box if it doesnt arrive by the the weekend i guess.

i also received a text today saying the following;

Hi Dragonx VF here! Install date confirmed for the 16/09/2013, you will need to be home all day, tech will be at your address between 8-9am. If you have NOT r

im not sure what was going to be after the r, i can guess but i shall leave it to your imagination :)

FAIL.

On Thursday Downer put a trench and 20mm pipe in from the road to our house. I called VF to confirm install still on for Friday, yep all good. So I take the day off.
10am no sign of anyone, so call VF. The tech is scheduled for midday, so all good.
2pm no sign of anyone, so call VF. They are not sure why no one is there, will call tech and get back to me.
I get a call from Chorus (I think it was them) who are contracted to do the install. They tell me my install is not scheduled till next week, WTF.
After a few calls with different people I conceded to a wasted day off work, with another required next week.
VF call to apologise and said there was a mix up with dates and they will be revisiting their process. I hope they do, as it was like the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing.

Pretty poor experience so far, lets hope it gets better.
