Can they install a Cisco instead if there is no bridge mode? Pretty poor if not.

Purchased it for myself but then things changed and now don't need it. Never used it myself.

 

As for if VF will connect to network I don't know. Never got that far. Why shouldn't they? They still use the devices.

They only use their own devices. If you bought this from somewhere else they won't connect. If you got this from Vodafone you have to return it or they'll charge for it.

I have had the same experience with the Technicolor. No bridge mode.

 

I complained to Vodafone in email and they actually rang me. !!

 

The guy who called me sent me a document on changing to bridge mode. It describes menu items that don't exist.

 

The guy told me that I would have to do a factory reset of the modem, and that should get the option available.

 

I haven't tried that yet... I'm a little scared of a full factory reset...

 

As a side note, does anyone else find the admin pages really flaky. ie clicking on a menu items flicks you back to the home page of the admin menu.

 

Makes it very difficult to use. 

 

 

 

Personally, I understand the reasoning for Vodafone wanting to give out an all in one device. But given that there are some limitations, and flaky interface, there should have been a bit more research on the hardware by Vodafone. Or at least acknowledge that there are members of the user community that may need more suitable hardware. It would probably have taken only one or two extra questions when signing up to clarify the needs there.

Will Vodafone actually worry much about getting the firmware upgraded with DOCSIS 3.1 not far away? Going on the assumption they will want everyone to upgrade...

I know nothing about DOCSIS 3.1. :-) Other than being a higher speed cable specification. (And I only know that because I Googled it. :-)  )

 

I asked the support person about firmware updates and he said that it's unlikely that Vodafone will actually contact us about such an update. 

 

He said there would probably be a web page where an update could downloaded from... But notification probably wouldn't happen.

 

I said that this is one of the reasons that some of the community would prefer to have dumb modems, because then we can update our routers as needed.

 

He then implied that firmware updates MIGHT be pushed out automatically by Vodafone. Which made chills run up and down my spine.

I'm curious why Vodafone chose a modem/router that is (at this point) over 2 years old.

 He literally sent a Word document that describes how to set bridge mode.

 

I can't attach files here (I think) so can't share it.

 

But it's very clear that on the Status tab, there should be a "Switch" menu option on the left menu bar.

 

But that doesn't exist for me, nor for anyone else as far as I can tell from this thread.

Mmmm.... There are elements which are similar, and references to the "switch" menu item are there. But the specifics of logging in and names of tabs are different.

 

FWIW, here's the text from the document. I can't get the images in here easily. It's a bit disjointed because the images are missing.

 

But I think you get the gist.

 

 

 

 

 

BRIDGING MODE

 

The following instructions are a quick guide in how to set the Technicolor TC7210d cable modem to Bridging Mode.

 

NOTE: A PC, or laptop, must be connected to one of the 4 available LAN ports on the rear of the TC7210d in order to configure the device.

 

  

 

On the PC, or Laptop, go to network settings and configure the stings as shown:

 

  

 


Open a web browser and, in the address bar, enter 192.168.0.1. If successful, the following page will appear and in this page leave the User name "blank” and for Password enter "admin".

 

The following page should appear:

 

 

 


Enter the customers preferred "username" and "password" for this device, then "Apply". The login prompt will appear again. Enter the new details to continue.

 


NOTE: If the modem is taking an age to come online, you can amend the DS frequency to a known good one the node that you are in. To do this, go to Status, Initial Scan and enter an appropriate Downstream frequency only (enter in Hz, ie 195MHz is 195000000). Then select "Apply". This will cause the modem to reboot.

 

Once the modem is back online, refresh the web browser. You may be prompted for a username/password. If so, enter the details and continue.

 


Under the Status Menu list, select "Switch Mode":


In the "Switch Mode" page, under "Switch Mode", select "Disable Mode", as below. Then select, "Apply":

 


The following should appear:

 

When the modem is rebooting it is recommended to disconnect the RF cable to be able to display the web browser to be able to view and change settings once the modem has booted up.

 


Once booted, refresh the web browser and the following page should appear:

 


In Bridge Mode, the Wireless interfaces must be turned off (disabled) by selecting Interface "Disable" and then "Apply" for both 2.4G and 5G.

 

 

 

As the modem is now configured and is in Bridging Mode, connect the RF cable to the cable modem to allow it to come online fully.

 

On the customers CPE device (PC/Laptop, or router), the NIC now needs to be configured with the Static IP and DNS settings:
Eg PC/Laptop: 

 

 

 

The customer should now be able to surf the internet.

 

 

 

NOTE: To come out of Bridging Mode, the modem has to be reset using the reset button on the
back of the unit.

So this was never resolved, was it? Is the only option to either run double NAT'd or to remove my existing wifi router?

That link has some reference to the cable modem supplier being able to supply the modem in different states, one of which they call CM mode which might be what we want. The RG mode is what is shipped by default, and this provides a standard residential gateway setup.
