I signed my parents up to VFX and they love the toll saving, but are getting a very annoying problem.
When they are on a phone call, the other end experiences loud beeps every now and then, almost an electronic squelch type noise.

I have gone around their house and disconnected everything from the phone jacks that might interfer.
They are using a Netgear 834 router (version 1), and I have flashed it to the latest firmware, which increased their sync speed to 5.5MB, so they are getting a good download/ upload speed.

They are using a Linksys SPA2102 for handling the VOIP stuff, and have a uniden cordless phone attached to it.

I'm not sure were to proceed from here? can anyone suggest anything?

Just want to do a "me too" but slightly different.  When I call my parents in South Africa usually near the start of the call I get a beep or two.  Sounds like a "battery low" or perhaps "call waiting" warning.  My parents do not hear it, just me.  My phone battery is not low and I was suspecting their battery might be low, but then they should hear the tone not me.  I also know I do not have any incoming calls at the same time, because I do not receive a notification e-mail.

It is not a problem, just sometimes a bit annoying.

I believe this is not uncommon, and I have experienced this with some of my VFX customers. The ATA device uses out of band DMTF signaling, i.e. those key-presses are detected and then sent as a "code" through the IP network, then turned back into audio tone at other end.
Sometimes background noise, bad phones etc can cause the ATA to think it has heard a key press, so sends the code off through the IP network.

A couple of things I have found that can be done to reduce this issue are:
Keep earpiece volumes (at both ends) as low as practical.
There are some FXS settings that are usually unlocked under the regional settings of the ATA device. By default, these are both -3 db. Lower these slightly, e.g. to -4 (careful to not lower too much, else voice goes missing too).

Hope that helps, I understand Linksys are also looking into this issue, so maybe there will be an official fix soon.

Hi

I am also experiencing really piercing fax like sounds randomly through the majority of our VFX calls which can only be heard at our end while on a call pretty hard on the ears and unpleasant, it is also not easy to counter the sharpness of the sound with a lowered volume as we are experiencing a number of other unsatisfactory issues with our service and poor volume is one of them. We have a very good panisonic phone working off a Linksys router.

As per your other post with the issue you are seeing this will probably be related , VFX relies on a steady DSL connection, you pointed out in your other post that you are seeing wildly flucuating variations in your DSL connection, if this is performing like this you will see a number of issues with the Voice Service, Delay in voice, misssing audio, etc none of this is related to the VFX service itself but related to the performance of the connection and router.

Log a fault please with the help desk and they can assist with sorting the DSL performance out first.

Btw what setup /  Router Model  do you have ?

I am not a wanna be geek but I was a Uniden Phone user and the beeps drove me crazy.  I have owned two Unidens and both beeped no matter how they are hooked up.  I have three friends with Uniden phones and all their phones beep.  Lightening took mine out and I bought a Panasonic... no beeps unless I am talking to a Uniden user.  Solution:  Get rid of the Uniden.  I hope this helps.  At least try another phone and see if the problem clears up.  It sure has for me.

Thanks for the info on the uniden phones, I use one at home with no problems, but I am willing to try anything to get this to work.
I am replacing the netgear router with the latest model (DG834G Version 4) as they currently use the first version DG834G.

I have lost count of the number of tickets that have been raised regarding this issue.

I will post an update after I have installed the new router.
