Approx how much data/month would the following need?
  • Gmail 4-5 times/day (no push email needed)
  • Google a few sites for info 3-4 times, maybe for 20 minutes total
  • Read a few RSS feeds while waiting for people
  • GPS once or twice
No movie previews or streaming radio needed.

Is there an app that allows you to log your position via GPS, to see a path later?

JonC: Obviously they're focusing on the high-end market with the plans,
but if you're only an ocassional user, then you could buy it on pre-pay.

Sorry, nope. No prepay options. Must be on a plan.

What are the $979 and $1129 iPhone-only, no-plan options for?  I'm confused.  Can you not just buy an iPhone at that price and chuck in a pre-pay SIM?

They're for people who are already on On Account etc. plans. So, no prepay.

I see - thanks.  I don't really understand how they could restrict that, but I guess they can somehow.

I think this is madly expensive.

I have been in NZ for 4 years now and still have not got used to the idea that we actually have to PAY for handsets at all! In the UK I had free Nokia handsets from Orange for over 10 years - including one that turned into a video camera!

Certainly, if all you want is a "normal" phone in the UK, no network will charge you for it if you are going "on account". There are at least 14 free handsets on Vodafone UK website today - one that comes with a free bottle of pink Moet et Chandon champagne!

That said, Telecom is no better. My wife bought one of their so-called "world" phones specifically for a month-long trip to Canada - which we specifically advised the Telcom shoptard of when we bought it - only to discover when we got to Canada that Telecom have no roaming ability there whatsoever!

These plans will probably just be a damp squib instead of the brilliant opportunity that they could have been - and yet again, we here in Godszone get ripped off just because we don't have enough market grunt to stop it. The EU at least busts these companies for behaving like this - see what it is currently forcing them to do about inter-EU roaming charges.

Rant over - for now!!

You got to be kidding me Vodafone, these prices are WAY to high, (say goodbye to this customer), looks like im getting a nice cheap one from the US after all :) then crack it and use it with prepay, yepee Smile altho the data costs will still be too high, oh well ill just stay will my current sony ericsson k700i as it does everything that i need it to do :) (it has maps and all that, i just never use it as vodafones data prices have been and still are too expensive.

1GB for 1 month can still get used up and a few days! Big let down Vodafone!

BigFella:
willnz: Hi guys,

Apologies if this has been asked already, but if I'm on an iPhone plan and not a YouChoose plan, does this mean I no longer qualify for Vodafone Family and BestMates? Oh, AND Local Zone? :o

Answer here

BigFella - I only ask as you seem to be the one most in the know!

I'm currently on a You Choose plan with a Broadband plan also. Have about 8 months left of a 24 month plan. I don't fully understand the answer given in the VF Q&A's.

Assuming I want to move across to the iphone 250 plan for $80/month and be locked in for 24 months, do i have to pay full price for the handset as opposed to cancellation fees on my current plan? What's my position here?

As you say, Vodafone and Telecom pricing have nothing to do with the iPhone - anyone's who's had a phone overseas will tell you that NZ prices are expensive with or without the iPhone.  But perhaps the iPhone media interest and international comparisons will open a few people's eyes and put pressure on the ComCom to do something about it.

amanzi: You just don't get it - it's more than a phone, the idea is to revolutionise how people USE phones. Puts the mobile internet in your pocket with proper GPS and great maps, *easily* installable apps, and greate UI. All that stuff has been half-heartedly available before but was slow and difficult to use. The iPhone can change all that, as any gadget guy should know. But Vodafone's plans are putting that out of most people's reach.

I fail to see why Vodafone are putting it out of people's reach. Plenty of people will pay the price.

We all know that Vodafone NZ is one of the biggest cash cows in the Vodafone group. It has one of the lowest airtime usage totals in the entire group and is one of the most profitable networks. So profitable infact that they had nothing better to do with all of their money than give their staff great bonuses! :-)

This doesn't change the fact that the iPhone never had been and never will be a device for low use users. Apple exist to make money. Vodafone exist to make money. Why did anbody ever expect to see pricing plans that varied significantly than what was already available in the marketplace? Why did people expect to get lots of airtime and 1gb of data for $40 per month?

Why does a Porsche cost more than a Volkwagon? Why does business class cost so much more than economy class?

The iPhone frenzy is nothing more than classic economics. There is *NO* reason why Vodafone should be offering the iPhone at crazy prices because there is no need.

Exactly - and if suspicions of low stock-levels are true, they'd be silly to price it so low that everyone could afford it.

Restricted supply + high desirability = high price.

Question

Will I be able to use the new $1 per day casual data rate on my iPhone?

 Answer

No. You’ll need to get either an iPhone plan, or a compatible On Account plan (You Choose, talkZone, or Corporate) with a compatible broadband plan for mobile.
