BigFella - I only ask as you seem to be the one most in the know!

I'm currently on a You Choose plan with a Broadband plan also. Have about 8 months left of a 24 month plan. I don't fully understand the answer given in the VF Q&A's.

Assuming I want to move across to the iphone 250 plan for $80/month and be locked in for 24 months, do i have to pay full price for the handset as opposed to cancellation fees on my current plan? What's my position here?

I'm not 100% on Consumer propositions, but I expect that you'd have to hit month 19 of your 24 month contract to be able to resign into a new contract at no charge. An early resign would be cheaper than the ETCs associated terminating your current contract. The early resign should give you access to the hardware subsidy.

Best to call 777 or pop into a store to confirm, but an early resign would be the way to go.

Vodafone can charge what they want and honestly, I never expected a $40 plan. But I'd happily have paid ~$6-70 a month with a $4-500 phone cost, and I think that would be a sweet spot for a lot of reasonably well-paid people.

Yeah, the max I'd really consider reasonable would have been $500 + $50-$60/mo.

That said, I'm still considering it.

Me too. I currently pay $40 a month with a youchoose plan which is dominated by my bestmate, but I would do another $10 a month at least in just checking my email.

Im keen (no WANT) to move on and start using data more and more from my mobile but moving to $80 and paying $700 is just too much. I think I could cope with only 250Mb a month to do what I want, but the overall cost is too high.

Its a shame because its so close I can taste it, but I just dont see the majority of 'switched on' people buying into it to be honest.

That's correct what you just said, but it's not clear (and it's likely) that it's using a full GPS chip same as the N95. It will be using the AGPS to locate where you are faster and then use data + maps to take to your destination where as with the N95 it's AGPS + Internal GPS module to take to your destination....there is no data usage in the N95 (except for a little to use the AGPS function)

The one thing that bother me most is that you cannot double your data for $10 a month like other mobile broadband plans. Excess data is charged at 10c per MB.

OK, so I'd like some advice.

I'm headed to the states in 2 weeks time where I'll be for 6 weeks total. I figure I'm going to need a phone while I'm there as I plan to travel around a bit and I need to get in contact with my friends and family anyway (I'm an American ex-pat).

iphone from AT&T - $199 USD
Single month on plan - $70 USD
Early termination fee - $175 USD
Total - $453 USD - $625 (approx)NZD

That leaves me with the phone, no contract, but it's locked to AT&T and will need unlocking.

Is this a viable option? Should I go for that?

Being an expat you might be OK, but they are going to run a credit check on you first !!

Heh, well if need be I'll get one of my folks to do it for me. My credit in the states is abysmal due to a defaulted student loan. But hey, I should be able to get it.

I'm more worried about how long I'll have to wait before I can use it here via unlocking, etc. I guess I could just consider it a glorified ipod touch that I can use as a phone eventually :)

I fail to see why Vodafone are putting it out of people's reach. Plenty of people will pay the price.

We all know that Vodafone NZ is one of the biggest cash cows in the Vodafone group. It has one of the lowest airtime usage totals in the entire group and is one of the most profitable networks. So profitable infact that they had nothing better to do with all of their money than give their staff great bonuses! :-)

This doesn't change the fact that the iPhone never had been and never will be a device for low use users. Apple exist to make money. Vodafone exist to make money. Why did anbody ever expect to see pricing plans that varied significantly than what was already available in the marketplace? Why did people expect to get lots of airtime and 1gb of data for $40 per month?

Why does a Porsche cost more than a Volkwagon? Why does business class cost so much more than economy class?

The iPhone frenzy is nothing more than classic economics. There is *NO* reason why Vodafone should be offering the iPhone at crazy prices because there is no need.

I am not surpised by these high prices...

This is raw economics, supply and demand stuff...
While there is to much demand, and limited supply, the price can be set high...its just that simple.

And it does not ever have to come down even once the demand drops and supply increases, as the device may be targeted at a particular high end market....Porsche dont drop the prices of thier cars to sell heaps....they keep the prices high to limit the cars to the upper market ths maintaining its prestege and desirabliity, thus enabling them to justify the high prices, hence better profits.

The less people that have something, the more desirable it can be, thus worth/cost more.

Personally....I think this is all a good laugh, reading all these people getting thier titties in a twist.
