Arg This is BS! and this is coming from the guy who wanted to pay anything to get his hands on this beast...

GUess not.

Shall we boycot the iphone in NZ till the prices drop? I think so. dont even give them the satisfaction of a petition. I think they will realise there is a problem when they have leftovers a week from july 11

Marketing manager susually do research to see what the competition is doing .

Apart from coming across as a complete plonker he has completely embarrassed himself.

He must think that NZ are so backward that we cannot look up the internet to see what other carriers are charging.

In my opinion a complete marketing disaster.

They could have used this to really give us decent realistic plans with realistic datacaps.

I've been keeping an eye on this thread all day and have kept out of it until now. But that interview tonight riled me up slightly...

If Vodafone's Marketing Manager can go on national TV and lie, then that puts the credibility of his company severly at jeopardy.

The point I am trying to make is that it is HIS JOB to know where the world wide market is heading. To research this and be competently familiar with it (at a minimum). It was clear that he was totally over his head and all he could really say is that he did not have knowledge of overseas prices. Anything else said would have been even more damaging to VF, and make him look like a complete arse.

He'll get a nice big bonus from his bosses though. They've got to spend the obscene amounts of money they are making on something...

So I thought it might be interesting to try and come up with a more "standardised" comparison of worldwide plans on an equal footing by taking the minutes, sms and data and rolling those into a "utility factor" to try and quantify how much "use" it gives you, picking numbers out of the air I came up with
~~Utility = Minutes + 3*SMS + 2*DATA~~
Utility = Minutes + SMS/3 + 2*DATA
to get around the "unlimited" problem I just set those to 1000 meg/sms, figuring that's probably the most people would use when it came down to it.

If we then take the monthly cost, and amortize the phone cost into that, and divide the utility by the cost we should end up with a more equitable indication of "how much bang for the buck am I getting".

Using the table somebody posted a little while ago in this thread I get a slightly interesting result, just looking at the 8GB, the best bang for buck is from Hong Kong, at 113.33 bangs for a dollar, the worst is Norway at just 5.89 bangs. Those norwegians have a really raw deal. New Zealand is 31.36 bangs, actually ahead of most of the other countries!

Using the table somebody posted a little while ago, we get Hong Kong on top with 46 bangs, Norway last with 3 bangs, NZ gets 10 bangs, ahead of Finland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

I've uploaded my spreadsheet if anybody wants to adjust the formula - http://sirius.gogo.co.nz/iphone.xls - the last two columns are the bang for buck ones.

I'm glad that John Cambell ripped into him - he had no comeback for why NZ was so much more expensive than anywhere else in the world. (even Mexico!)

Macs have always been higher priced not because "Apple price them at a premium to PCs".

They are higher priced because you get more in terms of software and hardware - ie. you get what you pay for. I'm not sure that Apple will appreciate being accused of inflating the prices for their Macs.

I think that while most of Mark said was a pre-prepared advertisement for Vodafone, he started to panic and came up with that off the cuff.

My thinking was "3 texts sent would probably be roughly the same amount of information as a minute on the phone with somebody in the end, or at least, a toss up between calling and texting at that point".

Better hope that the shipments of iPhones don't go somewhere else...

Vodafone shouldn't have used the previous head of ihug as the head of marketing. That was a terrible move.

Is this the first time anyone has cracked into Mark? If not, he should step down - this is going to ruin Vodafone's image deeply.

I think those values would need to be tweeked for the person - I have a need for about 10 texts a month, so coming with 600 should have a negative weighting since I am not getting value paying for something I dont want.

www.toshcomputers.com have stated on their website that they may be able to offer the 16gb iphone for $100 less than vodafones standalone price.

So another way we could not buy from vodafone.

Where is the $50 plan Mark Rushworth talked about on John Campbell tonight on Vodafone's iPhone Pricing page. The lowest one I see is $80

Yes, you are quite right, I shouldn't multiple them by three, they should be divided by three, 3 texts are worth 1 minute, texts are less useful than a minute call.

That changes the numbers a bit, NZ at 10, norway at 3 and Hong Kong at 46. NZ is still ahead of the game on a number of them. Even if I switch data to be /2 instead of *2 also.
