By then they may have changed rates, So I would assume in the last months of your contract you could resign early and get a cheaper rate?

BTW, I am happy to be corrected if I am wrong.
However, my experience with vodafone is that they will just auto resign you (CSR said so) .
Unless you ring up saying you want to go on such and such.
Im going off what ive been told by a CSR

Ive been on contract just over 9 months now.

No No No. They're not going to lock you in after 2 years. When your contract ends after 2 years, they will simply keep billing you at $250 a month for the premium plan. However, you will be allowed to change your plan to something else ($80 one for example) without incurring any penalties. :)

imadog:Any way you look at it - this was a major marketing balls up by Vodafone NZ. They built the hype by delaying and slowly releasing information. They should have seen this backlash coming a km away and lowered expectations earlier. I am sure the vodafone board will have something to say about this mess.

IMO they didn't have to deceive in order to hype this.

Delaying the information was fine, IMO, but baiting people with the "starts from $199 on a 2 year plan" was IMHO deceptive to the point of lying. It's something I might expect from Telecom - not cool.

Yes, it's my own fault for misinterpreting it, but "starts from $199 on a 2 year plan" to me suggested that it WOULD be $199 on a 2 year contract, not just on a ball-crunching plan.

If they had just delayed the information, then been upfront about it, people wouldn't have been as upset IMO. It would have been deflating and an anti-climax, for sure, but less so than the current balls-up.

No No No. They're not going to lock you in after 2 years. When your contract ends after 2 years, they will simply keep billing you at $250 a month for the premium plan. However, you will be allowed to change your plan to something else ($80 one for example) without incurring any penalties. :)

Well thats just even more ridiculous. Still paying off the iphone after you've finished paying for it ;)

and want to move to an offical iphone plan. Do they give you a special price because you already OWN the iphone? or are they greedy bastards like i assume and shaft you all the same?

If anyone's interested my local First Mobile store (central Auckland) said they will only have 5 iPhones for sale on Friday morning.

Normally, I only feel sorry for Kiwi's at Bledisloe Cup time, but I gotta tell you I'm really feeling for you tonight.

I saw that interview with that pratt from Vodafone (on Campbell?) on the Net tonight, and was really wishing he could have strapped that bugger down and applied a liberal dosing of blowtorch to his belly! :) What an evasive piece of work that was!

Anyway, don't want to rub any salt tonight. Good luck with the petitions.

The FAQ says, you won't get the subsidy since you have used the phone on a You Choose plan already.

Vodafone:

If you purchase an iPhone 3G, use it on You Choose plan then move to an iPhone plan, you will not be eligible for the iPhone 3G handset subsidy.

I seem to recall that when O2 got the Gen 1 iPhone they were mighty embarrassed by the low sales numbers in the initial launch period - when they had been expecting them to sell like Cabbage Patch Dolls in season.

I see no reason why we should pay for data at all: if it can be free in lots of places, why not here?

It would be much better if VF were a truly global operation. I bank with HSBC (no - not the Hawke's Bay Building Society as one shoptard recently suggested!) and I can essentially use it as a single bank with branches in almost every country in the world. Thus VF should have plans that apply worldwide on their network, base priced in US $ and charged locally at a fair exchange rate.

I am a pro photographer and we get ripped regularly down here: for example, Nikon prices are at least 30% lower in the States in real terms and they get a 5 year warranty on exactly the same products we get a 1 year warranty on! I bought a big telephoto zoom this year. NZ list price? NZ$ 12,000! US price converted to NZ$? NZ$7,000!

I just wonder where the ships bringing all these expensive datas (or "darters" as they say around here!) are docking. Perhaps we could raid them and steal some free datas?

Subsidy? Is that when you are actually going to get a new one? not on the plan?

I didn't think they subsidized on the plans in the first place. :P (I could totally be wrong here and just pwnd myself.)

I just thought it would have made more sense (Not Vodafones way of thinking, obviously) To offer a cheaper rate to those who own it already.

EDIT2: Looks like I misread your post, sorry. Yeah well, subsidy is for the handseld. But what about those who already own it. I mean, the current plans are paying off the iphone, correct, am I not?

Otherwise, it makes no sense to go buy your own to use it on an iphone plan and you just wasted a hell of a lot of money.

Yup, I did mention back on the 5th July that they only had 389 stock for ALL of NZ.

1 of those 5 will be the 16GB model, with the others, obviously, being the 8GB model.

I only ran the test on randomly-choosen *subpages* of the websites AKA NOT THE LONG AND GRAPHIC HEAVY FRONT PAGES, and the chosen sub-pages usually consisted of an article page or forum page, and most had zero flash elements. Just look at how large the average page size is for these popular websites I go to:

engadget.com (blog post subpage) 420KB
yahoo.com (news article subpage) 585KB
nytimes.com (news article subpage) 345KB
seedmagazine.com (article subpage) 223KB
discovermagazine.com (article subpage) 731KB
livescience.com (article subpage) 438KB

Average sub-page data size: 389KB/page.

So, using an iPhone with different 3G browsing limits, you can view:

100MB /30 = 3.3 MB per day = 8 web page views per day
250MB /30 = 8.3 MB per day = 21 web page views per day
300MB /30 = 10 MB per day = 25 web page views per day
600MB /30 = 20 MB per day = 51 web page views per day
1.0 GB /30 = 33.3 MB per day = 85 web page views per day
5.0 GB /30 = 166.7 MB per day = 428 web page views per day

Think of how fast you can zip through different webpages with a 3G phone getting 600-1200 kbps. You could easily view the 21 pages per day of the 250MB/month data plan in 10 minutes!

And remember, this doesn't even include all the other things people will be doing that use data:

* Google Maps (especially now with GPS!) - Very easy to use many MBs in one quick session of scrolling around a map. Have a route-following GPS navigation for 15 minutes could easily use 25MB.
* Sending and Receiving Email and attachments - Remember, No MMS for pictures! Other office-type and PDF documents will be sent around as well.
* Uploading Photos - Flickr, MobileMe etc.
* Online Chat via AIM/MSN/SKYPE
* Viewing Youtube, MMS-type video, and other online video - video can quickly use A LOT of bandwidth. 3-7 seconds per MB.
* Downloading applications and games
* Online multiplayer gaming
* Internet radio streaming
* Downloading music and video

Not to even mention all the native applications that will require internet access and server access to function....
