Which is?

Because the toothless regulatory framework lets them get away with it? Just a guess.....!

Assuming that I am very annoyed with Vodafone service, but the only phone I have at the moment is my trust worthy GSM/UTMS/HSDPA Phone, and I can't really afford to get another phone on a different network right now. What can I do? absolutely nothing. It's not like I can take my GSM mobile to another carrier, since there is only one GSM carrier in NZ. When you are the only one, you make the rules and there is absolutely nothing anyone can do about it.

Not so - or at least, it shouldn't be so.

In most mature democracies, abuse of monopoly power is controlled by the state on behalf of the citizens. I don't know how that works here in NZ - I have only been here 5 years or so and have not really come across it. In the UK, however, the Competition Commission had draconian powers to investigate and punish (with multi-million pound fines based on turnover) any perceived abuse and it uses those powers freely and regularly. The EU has additional powers and is currently forcing mobile carriers to cut roaming charges and so on dramatically within the EU zone.

Does it not work like that here - and if not, should we not also be pressurising the politicians to make it so?

Just been in to talk to a Vodafone store about You Choose and data rates. I've described it here : http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=40&TopicId=23853

Mentioning it here as it follows on from a some earlier posts in this thread last a couple of pages back.

It is important to remember that even those ISPs that offer "unlimited" always have a limit of some sort as part of their fair usage policy. For example, an ISP may limit "unlimited" to 240GB. In the case of mobile networks it would be substantially lower. The problem with "unlimited" plans is that the 95% low to medium users end up with a lower quality of service because 5% use it excessively. Reasonable data caps should be expected, but not "unlimited" data.

Some customers may consider they still do - Those who are still on one of the xtra plans before it was removed (Go Large).  However it does have 'acceptable usage' guidelines and had some controls/restrictions in place,
In reality you are right - no unlimited fixed line BB in NZ.

ROGERS CAVES

But I doubt the same will happen to VF. See the thing is, VF announced their plans so late, that even if Apple noticed, they would have no power to alter any stock heading towards NZ. Rogers had their plans announced a while back, and eventually when Apple learnt of the wrong doings of the Canadian company, the began diverting stock which was intended to head to Canada to EU. I don't think Apple can do anything about our little country, nor would it want to. Canada was a huge market, not so much as NZ, so I doubt Apple would waste energy and resources trying to help us Kiwis. One can only hope though...

On Monday I was a DEFINITE WOULD BE iPhone buyer. I had been for months... Now VF's taken than away, and I burn with jealousy as I think of everyone across the globe enjoying their new gadgets on July the 11th.

""The hype around this device is continuing to build and there is very limited stock," he said. "We're desperately trying to get hold of the next shipment.""

Taken from this page: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/story.cfm?c_id=5&objectid=10520590

Hopefully when VF means that they're "desperately trying", it means that they're having much difficulty. I just hope Apple makes it harder for them. Give them the same shaft they gave Rogers.

I know a (rather unhinged) vodabot retail staffer. We had a brief chat about the iphone today. Please note this guy has never risen above consumer retail staffer. He'll be working at the Queen Street outlet for the iPhone launch if you want to try to figure out which hysterical fanboy he is.

Also worth noting is that my girlfriend gets 3GB of mobile data per month for $30. All on Vodafone's old plans.

Anyway, now you have an unhindered view into the mind of a vodafone flunky.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(10:01:11 AM) Me:
<a friend> is writing to the commerce commission over vodafone advertising iphones for $199, when in reality it's a $6100 and a $199 deposite
he's pretty angry. I think most people are

(10:01:54 AM) Vodabot:
Yeah but people need to get real
prices in NZ are ALWAYS high for cellphones

(10:02:36 AM) Me:
it shouldn't be

(10:02:39 AM) Vodabot:
we have ONE network, we are MILES away

(10:02:50 AM) Me:
vodafone pay the same base rate other carriers do

(10:02:51 AM) Vodabot:
nz govt provides little support to comms companies

(10:02:55 AM) Me:
and their network is already established
the government shouldn't have to provide anything to telecoms companies
we already pay for it

(10:03:05 AM) Vodabot:
its totally different financial situation to other contries

(10:03:09 AM) Me:
it's not eh
it's the same

(10:03:15 AM) Vodabot:
govts in europe and uk and aussie do

(10:03:25 AM) Me:
if you can find examples I'll read them

(10:03:33 AM) Vodabot:
bro, 1.5 years working for a telco, you get to hear all the inside sh*t.

(10:03:46 AM) Vodabot:
If vf charged what euro chargs
there would be no 3g

(10:03:53 AM) Me:
it's not really 'inside' information

(10:03:56 AM) Vodabot:
there would be no bestmates etc, no nice phones
just a sh*tty bad coverage network

(10:04:11 AM) Me:
anyway, telecom are rolling out a 3g network and they'll be using 900mhz for the outlying areas instead of 850
so the iphone will have better coverage on telecom

(10:04:25 AM) Vodabot:
yeah and they use VODAFONEs cell towers
cos VODAFONE setup the infrastructure

(10:04:33 AM) Me:
it's more about the hardware,. not the pole holding it up

(10:04:38 AM) Vodabot:
with no help from govt
a REPEATER costs over 5 million dollars

(10:04:51 AM) Me:
so you're a hardcore vodafone fanboy now eh ;)

(10:05:10 AM) Vodabot:
not at all man, i just know how f*cking complex and expensive it is to SETUP
once its up its cheap

(10:05:18 AM) Me:
it's not that complicated

(10:05:27 AM) Vodabot:
thats why other countries with established networks are cheap

(10:05:29 AM) Me:
you realise vodafone's expansion won't support the iphone right?

(10:05:46 AM) Vodabot:
vf is going 3g all over nz over next 2 years

(10:05:59 AM) Me:
yeah
850mhz
which isn't supported by the iphone
it's a bit sad really

(10:06:11 AM) Vodabot:
I look at geekzone and what the media are saying all the time, and its actually funny how wrong some of the most basic stuff is

(10:06:21 AM) Me:
that's the thing, the informed info isn't wrong
vodafone are making money hand over fist
always have
at our expense

(10:06:39 AM) Vodabot:
f*ck its not a public service ffs

(10:06:40 AM) Me:
telecom have been so slack, they allowed them to get a monopoly

(10:06:46 AM) Vodabot:
its a company that set something up
if you cant afford it dont buy it

(10:06:54 AM) Me:
anyway, all telecom have to do is bring in the iphone at the regular price and they'll eat vodafones lunch
it's a public gouging
vodafone's existing plans are better than the iphone plans

(10:07:10 AM) Vodabot:
telecom are pretty sad bunch at the moment

(10:07:16 AM) Me:
yeah, they are
I'm sure they'll catch up though

(10:07:22 AM) Vodabot:
your last statement is wrong
choose 120 - 59.95
200 mb data 39.95
600 txt 12.95
how much is that 113

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Somehow I don't see 200MB of data for $40 being better than 3GB for $30. Hell, I don't see it being better than the no-plan rate of $30 for 300mb you get if you're NOT ON A PLAN come 28th July. The iPhone plans are worse than the available data plans. Period. None of us care about voice, free minutes or txts. Way to try to sell magic beans, vodafone.

1. Vodafone is progressively introducing a 900MHz network
2. 850MHz is supported by the iPhone 3G for 3G.

So it does. I was going off of hearsay previously and hadn't checked the specs.

Do you have any links outlining Vodafone using 900MHz instead of 850? Not that it matters so much now.

Vodafone to offer 900MHz service next year - but it was not "next year" though...

That doesn't mention expansion. I've heard specifically that new cell towers expanding coverage will use 850mhz. The person who told me this isn't here at the moment though, so who knows. It certainly makes sense to use 900mhz sites.

Not so. Here is O2's UK iPhone Unlimited data terms:

"UNLIMITED DATA / WIFI EXCESSIVE USAGE POLICY
Your O2 tariff for iPhone allows you unlimited use of Telefónica O2 UK Limited's Edge / GPRS networks and The Cloud's UK Wireless LAN network, for personal internet use, email and Visual Voicemail (VVM) on your iPhone only. All usage must be for your private, personal and non-commercial purposes.
You may not use your SIM Card in any other device, or use your SIM Card or iPhone to allow the continuous streaming of any audio / video content, enable Voice over Internet (Voip), P2P or file sharing or use them in such a way that adversely impacts the service to other customers of O2 or The Cloud. If O2 reasonably suspect you are not acting in accordance with this policy O2 reserves the right to impose further charges, impose network protection controls which may reduce your speed of transmission or disconnect your tariff at any time, having attempted to contact you first."

There is NO limit specified - merely that if you are obviously misusing the network they will have a word with you!
