Awoke early for a little dawn surfing at 0530 and can't access any international sites at all - just get a network timeout message.  NZ sites loading fine but slowly, is this another result of the Torrent "bug" affecting the system, and will it improve after 8am I wonder?

This will have most likely been the issue.  Very interesting that you were still able to browse national sites.
