I'm on a 24 month YouChoose 20 plan and am about 13-15 months through it. I'm looking at buying an iPhone 3GS with an iPhone 60 plan, I have searched and have not been able to find out if I would have to pay my early termination fee or if I am eligible to switch. Looking at the YouChoose switching chart it is free to switch from a cheaper to a more expensive plan, is this the case with the iPhone plans?

You can transfer from You Choose to an iPhone plan for free after your first 6 months of contract (according to Switching to an iPhone plan info here) however I think you only get the handset subsidy if you sign a new 24month contract.

If that's the case, Early re-sign fees for You Choose are $150 if you're in months 13-18, and free after that - but I would go into a store and see what they can do ;)

I was in the exact same situation. I was on a YC plan and wanted to move to an iPhone 130 plan when the iPhone 3G came out last year. I was about 16 months into my YC plan at the time.

So I looked at the same link above and thought great it won't cost me anything to break my contract and move to a new 24 month contract.

Went into my local Vodafone store and they said it would cost me $150 to switch. I said that from looking at the website my understanding was that it was free. Two employees looked at the website and both agreed it would be free, but the system said it would still cost $150 so when the contract printed out he crossed it off, wrote $0 and we both signed it.

As a side issue I said to them that surely I can't have been the only person in this situation, wanting to move from a YC to an iPhone plan, and according to them I wasn't they'd signed up "millions" of people...

The first bill came and of course I was charged $150. Called 777 but they said they couldn't help, went back into the store and showed them the bill and the contract, and was then told they were right to charge me the fee, but "in this case" they'd waive it for me. It took another three weeks to have it credited, had to go in three times (once each week) because each time they said it would take two days but it never happened. On the third occasion when I got a bit annoyed with them and told them it was ridiculous it was finally processed.

Bit of an OT rant there but that was just my experience from being in the same situation as you. So I would suggest that you at least print out that chart and take it into a store with you in case there are any dramas, or kindly ask them to check the chart on the website while you're there.

I feel for you Corksta, I to had the same situation. End up getting resolved after SIX calls! I was 5 months into a $39.95 starter plan, and wanted to change to a you choose 120 starter type plan. To cut a long story short, I bargined with the vodafone people, managed to get my termination fees waived which was good. NO! it was a big hassle, as i said, six phone calls later over 2 months just to get someone to action it. Everyone said it wasn't there responsibility.

All good now. The only issue I have now is my N97 being to slow.

Bit of an OT rant there but that was just my experience from being in the same situation as you. So I would suggest that you at least print out that chart and take it into a store with you in case there are any dramas, or kindly ask them to check the chart on the website while you're there.


As you probably already realized, the sales rep got it wrong initially. You were meant to pay early termination charges however since they made a prior agreement with you to strike it off, they had to honour that by applying a manual credit.

All customers are suppose to pay the ETCs for breaking any of the contracts before the term is up.

You should submit a feedback to say the website is placing up wrong information.
