It sounds to me like you agreed to terms to get the discounted rate now you want out without paying the disconnection fee. Though TC may do something to help you, mostly for PR value, I don't see how you changing your mind should get you out of a contract you signed.

Sorry, I have to agree with the majority of the comments!

Knowing that you may be moved with short notice, did you mention that to TelstraClear?  Did you ask them what the early termination fees would be and whether they would waive them if you moved out of the supply area?

You had two more alternatives!  1 don't get digital TV at all or 2, get it from Sky.  As one of the other posters mentioned at least if you were moved to somewhere else in NZ you would still have got service.  You may have had to pay a re-install fee but the place you went to may have already had a dish etc!

TCL do not hide their fees - the following link shows that there is a $149 early disconnection fee for TV only;

Perhaps TCL will come to the party for PR sake and waive the fee - maybe that was your goal.

Good luck :)

Procrastination eventually pays off.

Thanks all for the feedback - if nothing else it has made me realise how lucky I have been with some other providers in the past.

As a final summary/answer to some of the comments/questions I just want to reiterate that I don't have a problem paying break fees if I choose a contract option over a non-contract option to get subsidies/discounts - where I have a problem is when the only option offered is a contract and the provider can not provide coverage outside a narrow geographic area. What makes it worse in this case is the requirement that I sign up for services I don't currently have (i.e. phone) to avoid what I see as an un-related break fee.

Anyway - thanks again for the feedback....perhaps surprisingly, having a bunch of people come in on the side of TCL has helped me see the other side of things a bit more clearly and although I am not sure that I agree with the majority in this case my need to vent has been sated!

Any a final comment - despite my vent that started this forum, I must generally admit to having been impressed with the TCL cable ISP/TV plans and would not have had a second thought about staying with them in Auckland if they could provide the same services in Auckland as they do here in Wellington.......

Have a good week everyone :-)
