Sorry in advance for slightly threadjacking.

Does vodafone limit the speed that a 2degree's user can get roaming onto there network? I always seem to get pretty pathetic speeds and just tested again now. Im located in the Blenheim CBD, which is covered by vodafone DC-HSPA+, my device is a 2degrees supplied Nexus 5. Theres no network settings i can see that could be changed, its set to 4G preferred, wishful thinking i know ;)

I chose the wellington Telecom server to try and avoid any internal routing issues.

Just did a speedtest then (3G):

Telecom - 17.9mbit/s down, 1.7mbit/s up, 89ms ping.
2degrees - 2.8mbit/s down, 1.1mbit/s up, 94ms ping.

4G: Telecom - 92.8mbit/s down, 49.4mbit/s up, 48ms ping.

Maybe 2D has a cell where you are testing in Blenheim

They do indeed have a cell tower here.. which is how i was on 2degrees on the first test and vodafone on the 2nd, hence why i was asking if vodafone limit the speed once im roaming on the vodafone network ;). It was just out of curiosity, but seeing that other users earlier on get decent speeds roaming im guessing it is throttled as there is a 2degrees tower in town?

All

Well I got myself a TCNZ 7.2Mbps handset today to use as a Wifi hotspot when I go on holiday

On 3G the best I have got tonight [between 10-11pm] was 4Mbps DL and I'm in suburban Wgtn [Jville] and it tends to be 2-3Mbps some times 1Mbps

Hopefully this is because it is that busy time of night ?

Note my DSL is consistently almost at sync rate i.e. 9Mbps DL

ps: WHen I use the new handset on Wifi at home I only ever get half i.e. 4-5Mbps what I get from my Wifi laptop which gets 9Mbps at the same time could it be my home Wifi is 802.11g and the handset doesn't like that ?

Any ideas ?

4Mbps is prety good for a 7.2Mbps handset.

Remember that the quoted figure is a theoretical maximum of the radio interface of the cell; you will never achieve that in real world conditions. The best you can hope for is 85% of that (due to signalling and IP header overheads) and even then if you have a perfect signal and you are the only person on that cell.

Thank you all for your replies

I have had pretty good performance using a 7.2Mbps TCNZ handset as a hotspot i.e. 3-5Mbps

I was curious as to the 2D performance so last night I puchased 50MB of pre paid data to do some test to satisfy my curiosity but I found that that I could not do a OOKLA speedtest from my 2D handset [Android 2.2] no matter what I tried but it works fine when on Wifi no such issues on the TCNZ handset

DOES 2D BLOCK PEOPLE FROM RUNNING OOKLA SPEEDTESTS OVER 3G CONNECTIONS ?!

Not at all. Did you check to see if you could actually browse the internet while on 2degree's?
