Just trying this (since I cant get calls over the voip in any reliable manner) - anyway, caller id just comes up as unavailable on my phone.

I dont recall it always being like this, is it something new or just because im going to a telecom mobile whereas before it was a vodafone? makes it all pretty useless to me IMO if I cant see who is calling

Some networks don't pass on the caller ID correctly, i.e. may pass on the CID from the diverting number rather than the callers number. Or sometimes just won't pass on the CID for any diverted calls. I noticed this years ago when I was with Telecom mobile, would only get the diverted number, not the callers number. But when I moved to Vodafone (Bellsouth), it would pass on the caller's CID and display it was a diverted call.
It's a bit hit and miss. Another thing I noticed was overseas calls hitting the Telecom network (landline or cellular), usually would not display the CID, but often on Vodafone it does.

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster and even more now as they are upgrading their rural Conklins. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend $195 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

It shows properly on my vodafone mobile when I forward it to that, but that doesn't really help me cut down the number of phones I carry.

Im wondering if telecoms doing some weird filtering of caller id after their little embarrassment over the voice mail way back when. If I cant see who is calling me then I guess I will have to rethink the porting to telecom.

No Telecom do not "Filter" Callerid passing of Caller ID at a Interconnect level is pretty standard, most likely it will not being passed via the carriers interconnect links to Telecom, they may be switching calls offshore and hiding CLI or may just be blocking CLI on there interconnect links, Telecom will pass CallerId when presented.....I would query your provider in the first instance

Ive raised a fault with italk via their forums (which seem to be spam free now) - not holding my breath.

Im thinking I may have to bite the bullet and get a linksys ata so I can register with vfx, much as I hate most of their products.

Well, after italk fobbed me off to telecom (I would have expected they would have tried to sort it with telecom but hey, guess customer service doesnt matter to them) - anyway, telecom say that forwarding caller id between networks will not always work and leave it at that. So I guess I will still be carrying a vodafone prepay with me to get calls that ring home.
