Hi all,

Since trying out the new xtra GO LARGE plan, i have seen a dramatic change in the quality im getting when using my voip service. It is even worse than using it when im throttled down to dial-up speed once ive reached my cap. The sound breaks really bad. I dont know if this problem will only be for the meantime that Go Large is just setting up or that it is an interleaved problem (dont know if Go Large uses this) as stated in http://www.telescum.co.nz/?p=badthings&PHPSESSID=5db98648c47ae559ab51f6d731ed452f under Disabling.

I have tried all codecs available.

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

XTRA don't allow Interleaving to be disabled, whereas other ISPs do.  Orcon in fact disable interleaving unless you specifically request it to be enabled.

Interleaving is bad for VoIP because it increases the latency.  So if you want to use VoIP over your broadband connection, I would suggest you change to another ISP.

Somebody had a list of the services that were going to be throttled - it may pay to check if RTSP is on this. If it is with the current problems other people are experiencing with very poor P2P speeds it may explain the poor VoIP quality.

I've heard a few reports of Skype being virtually unusable on Go Large as well so Telecom's new Layer 7 throttling may be responsible for the problems.

I was on the Adventure plan and it was doing fine until I moved to Go Large.. Voip is essential to me as I have relatives and love ones there. Ive gone back to the landline to call Australia, but would like to refrain from it.

If i move back to Adventure plan, anyone know if the problem will still continue since there will be no throttling inlvolved. hmm is it the unleashing of xtra that affected it or just the Go Large plan.

im willing to wait a week or two to see if any changes happend. Would like to know if anyone in the forum uses voip over Go Large, especially mynetfone.

the quality im getting i believe I can describe as unusable. 80% loss of voice.

Thanks
