You just need to open a new Excel session if you already have one open. So go to your shortcut and launch a new session.

Pin the Excel to the task bar and click it to open the first excel.

Then hold Shift + Left Click to open the second excel window (works Office 2010 and below)

For 2013 it opens in separate windows.

I used to have issues trying to copy/paste between new instances. Mind you the company was running WinXP service packs galore and office prehistoric.

I guess this isnt the case in win7+ and the latest office?

I haven't had any issues with it. I used Win7 and Office 2010 for a year. Now I run Win8 and Office 2013 still no issues runs perfectly.
