there is no way windows should be taking up 83gb. maybe 30gbs tops, so by the time you install your software you should still have a heap of free space.

Yeah it can... just had one today that had 60GB of temp files in c:\Windows :D

THey only had Office and couple other apps installed....  the temp files were dozens of 5MB log files for Windows Store.... which they dont use for anything.

Writing archival and clean-up code really really sucks!

Especially for complex databases.

Been there, done that.

I guess windows programmers also think post-install clean-up code blows!

Budgets only seem to cover functionality -- and clean-up code isn't really part of functionality.  People can always buy larger harddrives, after all.

You may have another partition (drive) HP recovery of around 10 Gb.

kotuku4: Those HP workstations have lots of HP utilities, and some partitions.

If its an HP, it will be riddled with crapware & un-needed partitions (same as every other branded PC )   :-(

Ditch the 128Gb , its too small to be of any real use.
Buy a 500Gb SSD , do a clean install of win10. If for any reason you have issues, you can put the 128G back in while you sort things out.

Keep it simple . Single HD, single partition, clean Win10 install.
:-)

🤣 Have you seen a 10+ year old Windows 7 machine? 😭

Have a nice look at the C:\Windows\WinSxS folder. Even after 3 years, cleanmgr.exe can find 12GB of Windows Update files to delete. So many files are forgotten in C:\Windows\Temp. And, we haven't even looked at C:\Windows\Installer yet.

WinSxS is a special folder, that most disk space utilities don't calculate correctly because of NTFS linked files

Does Windows Explorer calculate it correctly? This is since Jul-2016 on Windows 10.

Because most disk space utilities are 3rd party software, it's a lot faster to simply right click & choose Properties. ☺️

So a conclusion to this update:

Thanks OmniousS

OmniouS:

You can't go wrong with these: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/HDDSAM61500/Samsung-860-EVO-500GB-SSD-V-NAND-SATA-III-6GBs-RWM

I did get one of these but from Computer lounge they were cheaper

I then used AndrewNZ suggestion of Macrium Reflect only took me two attempts to figure it out

I didnt do any of the suggested clean out stuff didnt want to push my luck, above my paygrade!

Once again thanks to all!

So anyone want to buy a 128gb ssd drive??
