In vista I was able to get explorer running as admin so I didnt have to click the damn UAC with every action in directorys that the user account didnt have write access to, since I have my media set so that everyone is read only, it makes it easier when sorting things out.

But in windows 7 this doesnt seem to work, right clicking exploere and run as admin opens it, but it still bothers me on every move, rename, etc. Also it seems that it UAC has asked, it doesnt want to cancel properly or give me a progress bar.

This is the case both on the old machine and the new one I am still putting together so its not a problem with the upgrade from RC to final.

Any suggestions or is working from an admin commandprompt really the only way to do it?

I remember a Citrix trick of copying explorer.exe as explorer2.exe. Perhaps that would work?

This is a reg hack to make taskmgr run as admin all the time (So you get to see all the processes)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers]

"C:\\Windows\\System32\\taskmgr.exe"="RUNASADMIN"

Perhaps changing it to
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers]

"C:\\Windows\\explorer.exe"="RUNASADMIN"

will do the trick. (Note it's a per user setting)

Start - Shift rightclick a blank space in the start menu - Exit Explorer - Ctrl+Alt+Del - Make sure task manager is elevated by clicking show processes from all users - now File - Run - explorer.exe. This should work, hope I have explained it clearly enough. :)

I ended up just attaching the USB drives to the XP VM which is free of this nonsense, somewhat slower but I was able to just start it and leave it going which is more than can be said for it with UAC.

You could have just disabled UAC in Vista, Windows 7 UAC is alot nicer IMOHO.

Yeah, it doesnt freeze everything to redraw the screen dark with the dialog _all_ the time, just sometimes.

What the hell is the point in doing that. With 30-40 windows open it takes a good few seconds to do it.
