i just used wubi to install.

I crtl alt deleted and rebooted. Now i just keep getting the windows xp login screen

Have you selected the Ubuntu option at boot time?

Is Ubuntu listed as a boot option at all?

got couple of errors when i use startx

(EE) CHROME(0): No valid modes found
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a useable configuration

Fatal Server error:
no screens found

waiting for X server to begin accepting connections

my wireless connection is via a usb wireless antenae

That means that the X Server (the graphics server) can't find a suitable screen to output to.

Basically, an undetected/unsupported monitor or graphics card...

The "connection" is not anything to do with Internet connections.

Could you check the X11 configuration file (by runnning "nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf") - possibly give a camera shot?

It won't let me cut and paste a picture.

Basically i get a white line on the top that says
GNU nano 2.0.7 File: /etc/x11/xorg.conf Modified

then black/blank screen down to the control instructions at the bottom (eg ^G gET HELP)

I said camera shot (which is a shot taken by a camera, different from a screenshot).

Make sure the path is exactly how I typed it out for you (as it's cAsE sEnSiTiVe), otherwise, an empty xorg.conf file is disturbing.

Just in case you don't know how to use the controls, ^ means [CTRL], so to exit, press [CTRL]-X

first 3 screen pictures. i used x11 not X11 first time round.

It has taken me a while to work out putting pictures on geekzone

At boot prompt, select English, then press F6. Remove the flags from and including quiet, and add vga=771. Boot as normal to the screwed up desktop.
CTRL-ALT-F1
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Add the line:

DefaultDepth 16

to Section "Screen"
CTRL-X
Y
ENTER
CTRL-ALT-F7
CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE

Thanks a lot! That did the trick

But its not slow for me, its pretty fast! I am in Vista Ultimate and Macbook and have allocated 256MB for my VPC.

NeoTech: Well, quite a lot of manufacturers don't release their code to the open source community, so WiFi really only has started to become easier within the last year (it still isn't perfect though)
