I need a new laptop to run Linux on and urgently need some recommendations, please.

My trusty Dell Latitude D820 gave up it's ghost today after several years of faithful service. Now I need something quick, something I can just pick up in the Auckland area, since I need it sooner, rather than later.

This is what I am looking for and what's important to me:

  • Needs to work well with Linux (Ubuntu 9.10). Specifically: Suspend to RAM, wireless, sound, shouldn't cause any issues.

  • At least 1600 pixels horizontal resolution would be nice (I'm a developer and need to see multiple editor windows side by side). But I can tell that for budget laptops that is rare, so I guess if really absolutely necessary I could also deal with around 1400 pixels, but 1600 or more would be greatly appreciated.

  • I'm not a gamer, so 3D performance is not so important (a few, little desktop effects, maybe).

  • At least 2 GByte of RAM (initially, 1 GB is fine if I can upgrade later).

  • At least 80 GByte of disk, more is better.

  • Price range between $1000 to $2000, closer to $1000 would be nice.

What can you recommend? Does Dick Smith (or some other local retailer) have something on offer that fits the bill?

Thank you very much in advance already!
