However you are assuming that there is actually a incorrect bank account number. If they simply get a number or two wrong then there is still that small chance the number exists. It is certainly different when it's a wrong suffix AFAIK the banks generally reserve all possible suffix combinations when giving you an account but I could be wrong there.

I also agree with the landlord situation above as it amazes me to hear stories like this as what landlord in their right mind would let their tenants fall so far behind. My landlord is my best friend and his wife (wife owned the property before I moved in) and even they will notify me if he payment doesn't show up a day after it's expected.

$7000 is at least 3 months behind (based on $500 rent per week) so more likely that's probably closer to over 4 months worth of unpaid rent. However I also think that there's a better than average chance that the whole story is not being told here as it simply doesn't sound right that any landlord would let a tenant miss that many payments. I am not saying that the poster is incorrect in what they've been told but I think more than likely they don't actually know both sides of the story. There is always two sides but yeah who knows.

Either way I would love to know how the original OP got on with getting their money back and also how the other posters friend gets on at court in relation to their $7000 in unpaid rent.

freitasm: I would expect every bank account to have a check digit, but to my surprise this (is) was not the case here in New Zealand. Having a check digit would really reduce/remove this kind of problem.


They do in NZ - it ties up with the bank / branch and account number ordering.

eg. 01 0101 0123456 00

The bank (01) and branch number (0101) are unique. You can't have 02 0101 branch.

When the reserve bank issued the branch numbers originally it was based on location. For Auckland CBD it was

02 0100 BNZ
06 0101 NBNZ
01 0102 ANZ
03 0104 WBC

The number 0123456 are not sequential. They skip every 8 digits however the starting sequence is different. eg

02 0100 0000008
02 0100 0000016

01 0102 0000002
01 0102 0000010

The last two digits can be anything from 00-99 this is just the suffix. Most are 00-50 for deposits 90-99 loans 80-89 term investments etc.

I use the ASB and they don't ask for a name when transferring money into someone else's account.

Nope, I've sent stuff to people and just put their nickname in there without any issues. It's just for your own reference.
