i found with alchemy if you stacked your deck with 2 cards (cant remember the names of them) you could always go through your entire deck, have 3 or 4 buys and about 12 gold to spend.

prosperity i found the cards and extra money just made the game silly.

seaside, didn't like the extra island pieces (where you can "save" cards etc).

intrigue is really good, really good extra cards, and base are very good.

nzgameshop.com is a good place to buy boardgames, free shipping and cheap (takes about 4 to 8 working days to get here).

Hmmm, Ticket to Ride. I'm quite partial to that, although the iPad version is more convenient.... Well, unless you try to play it multiplayer over Wifi.

Yeah per prior posts, Settlers of Catan and Carcasonne are *excellent* starters to levelling up from Monopoly.

'Dixit' is another very simple game but really fun with the right people.

I'd recommend checking out reviews for games that you see here, which has them split out by genres.

I like:
- History of the World
- Settlers of Catan
- Ticket to Ride
- Seven Wonders

Friends are keen on Robo-Rally, but I don't really like it.

Thanks for the ideas guys, seems Settlers of Catan is listed as 4-6, apparently Zombies ! ! ! is better with 4 people so that leaves Carcasonne for 2 players pretty much. I'll see if my partner will like it and might get it.

Settlers is an excellent choice.  Carcasonne does support 5 players i think, and up to 6 with expansion. I've had good fun playing multiplayer carcasonne sessions.

The carcasonne iPhone / iPad app may only support 2 players, not sure.

E
dit: Here's a link to the Zombies!!! game http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2471/zombies

What he said. BGG is a fantastic resource.

Here are a few Geeklists that others have created that show good 'starter' games to get into that world of 'real' boardgaming. Cool

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/153762/my-girlfriends-introduction-to-gaming

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/152008/please-help-what-games-do-you-consider-must-haves

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/149171/will-it-gateway-a-weight-list-of-my-games

If you click on the linked name of the game it will will take you to that games page, there are reviews including video ones that show you how the game plays for most games, giving you more of an idea of if you will like it or not.

http://www.bookdepository.com/ - need to search on individual games or by publisher, but free shipping!

http://www.nzgameshop.com/board-games-and-card-games - great selection, awful indexing, free shipping again.

I know they cant compete on prices but Seriously Board do give great service.

Oh and if you want a good Zombie game get Zombicide.

One more geeklist for what to get into if you like your first taste of whatever it is you choose to get.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/139559/what-game-should-replace-settlers-of-catan-and-tic

Careful though - if you get hooked, it coudl get expensive...

Hmm, two-player board games for Board Gaming newbies?

<checks collection>

Lost Cities - great 2-player card game.
Jambo - trading game.
San Juan - really good 2-player.

Have a look on Boardgamegeek for these, or just do a search for 2-player games.

Regards,

 - David.

Another +1 for Settlers of Catan. We play it so much I have customised a table specifically for it. We have the Seafarers expansion (best expansion IMHO, adds much variability) and recently the Traders and barbarians expansion also.
Highly recommended!

Cheers,
Joseph

I have been looking at Catan for the longest time. My Son is 10 now and I am wondering how feasible it is to play for him (he is pretty bright and can strategise well). What is the length of time for an average game? I considered buying it for my phone, but it's $15USD!

I think he'd probably be fine with it, once you understand the concept its pretty straight forward.

My board game playing took a back seat for a couple of years when our kids were born - it was too hard to find the time.  Recently, now they are sleeping more soundly and consistently, my wife and I have started playing again.  I even built a felt-topped table to go on top of our lounge coffee table, to give us better space to set up games.

One of our go-to games over the years has been 7 Wonders, but it's better as a 3+ player game.  Recently, we picked up 7 Wonders Duel, which is a 2-player variant.  It's quite a good revision, and takes less time to set up, but introduces some neat variables around the use of Science and Military cards.  Games only take about 30 minutes to play, after setup, which works well when trying to fit in a game around kid's (and our) bedtime.

For those who enjoy (or are looking at) Settlers of Catan, a similar concept to 7 Wonders Duel is Rivals of Catan.  It's a card-based version, designed for two players.  It retains a lot of the original gameplay, but with fewer pieces and no gameboard.  There are different decks included in the base version, so you can ramp up the complexity and variations once you get the basic gameplay down.  It's probably not as expandable as the full-blown board version, but still good for those that are looking for a quick game.
