I just saw this and it made think of this thread:

https://www.cnet.com/news/the-best-board-games-for-tabletop-2019/

The Jaws one seems tacky, but is apparently quite fun.

Hammerer:

I recently played about 30 games of monopoly with a kid who LOVED it. It was soul-destroying. It was far too monotonous because there is realistically only one two-player strategy: stop the other player getting any sets while ensuring that you get at least one set and then raise the rents as high as you can. And that strategy is so dependent upon the roll of the dice.

It is also basically a zero-sum game: if I get something then you can't have it.

Isn't that the point of Monopoly? to show how the rental/property market will end up in the control of a lucky few?

And it is proving to be very realistic based on NZs property market :)

I've been playing the Royal Game of Ur, after seeing Tom Scott play this with the delightfully eccentric Irving Finkel, the historian who deciphered the rules from the original Sumerian.

Link here.

The rules are simple enough for my 7-yr old to grasp, and it has a good balance between skill and luck.

I'm quite fond of co-op board games. Some of my favourites are.
