The other day I noticed my iPad charger wasnt working, so had to charge it off the computer in the mean time. 
Called Apple, ordered warranty replacement. Said it would take 2 days.

Courier turns up this morning, with this:

(Ipad under A3 sized bag, and the USB portion of the charger on top.

You'll notice there are 2 bags. 

Bag 1: USB part of the adaptor, return courier bag and return instructions.
Bag 2: DuckHead (Wall Connector) portion of the adaptor, return courier bag and return instructions. 

They only put a hold of $30 on my credit card for this, so if the charger is worth only that, surely the shipping would cost more than its worth? 2 parcels, shipped from AUS to NZ, then back again in different bags. Cant be cheap.

Is this maybe a one off? or is this regular? I've never had more than one thing ordered at once from apple. 

Not making a huge deal about it, it was fast and easy processes, but I mean, really..

I've only ever had one thing shipped to me by apple and it was a replacement bottom plate for my old mid 2009 macbook as they were offering new ones due to discolouring to the white finish. It came in a cardboard box that was lined with foam then inside that another cardboard box.

What about packaging material around it to pad it? Maybe they expect you to wrapping it up in lots of padding.

Things I have had from Apple have always had minimal packaging (enough for security and safety - nothing more) and a sensibly sized courier bag or box.

Maybe someone in the office had trouble finding the smaller bags?

Why did they put ANY hold on your card for a warranty return?

They've never done that to me.

They put the hold on it, to ensure you send the old one back. Stops people making bogus warranty claims for extra free items, and allows them to provide super speedy service.

Way back, I ordered a physical disc copy of Snow Leopard from Apple. Turned up in a similar A3 TNT courier bag and the cardboard case was beaten to ****.

It happens. They may have run out of smaller courier packaging. And it's highly unlikely Apple are paying a per bag fee for shipping logistics like Joe Blogs would down at the local post shop.
