SJB: Penny Dreadful Season 2 8.5/10

Really excellent Victorian horror/supernatural story starring Eva Green with strong characters and a great atmosphere. Built very nicely on season 1

I also would like to watch this series. Shame it is not available on Netflix NZ. It has been around since 2014 with 3 seasons.

IMDB = 8/10 (97,816)

Rotten Tomatoes = 2.8/5 34% (5,408)

Fauda An Israeli production dealing with an undercover unit who operate in Palestine. Needless to say the Palestinians reaction to it is not great as they say it doesn't show the conditions of life for the everyday arabs truthfully enough. But it also does show that the Israelis means to a end leaves a lot to be desired. Turn off the dub (dubbing is never a good thing I reckon ) and watch with subtitles far more enjoyable. A solid 8/10 on Netflix nz

My Brilliant Friend TVNZ OnDemand. Also reading the books. Good adaptation! About the lives of two women from girlhood and their poor neighbourhood in Naples from about 1940 onward. One gets an education past mid primary, the other doesn't. I am on book three of four and can recommend the books too.

Little Drummer Girl TVNZ OnDemand/BBC IPlayer 2/10

From the John Le Carre novel a story about Israeli's searching out Palestinian militants.

Plot - feeble

Acting - feeble (especially the lead actress)

Suspense - non-existent

Summary - Avoid at all costs

I'm starting to think after this and The Night Manager (that I also thought was pretty awful) that if a John Le Carre story is to transfer to the screen successfully it needs George Smiley as one of the characters.

i thought that this was good , the camera work is fantastic and the plot is fine , it is based on fact, and as spy thrillers go it's worth a watch.

Yeah, I'm really enjoying this.
Finding it quite gripping and pretty well made.

Just started re-watching "Whose Line is it Anyway", the UK version starting from Season One Episode One, which went to air in 1988.

It has dated a bit in terms of technical quality, and both the clothing and the "topical" jokes are very 1980s. Plus it's a bit odd nowadays to see an actor sitting down with an ashtray smoking until they are called for a game.

But it's still very funny, and a good way to fill in 25 minutes or so of chilling time at the end of a busy work day.

That Rotten Tomatoes link is to a different Penny Dreadful. Here is the correct one:

Rotten Tomatoes = 91%

Season 3 was disappointing, and the end left so much unresolved. You'd actually be better to stop at the end of season 2.

Working my way through season 3 at the moment and I thought it was pretty good. The episode focussing on Vanessa's incarceration I thought was particularly good.

It's a shame when a show comes to the end of a season that is obviously meant to be followed by another but is then canned. I've often thought in that situation it might be worth while the studio making a single extended final episode in place of the canned season to tie up all the loose ends. I'm sure in a lot of cases the audience would be there for that sort of finale.

Last night watched Pine Gap - not to bad - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7371868/

Just saw this article in todays Herald - https://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/news/article.cfm?c_id=1501119&objectid=12175608 - Netflix reveals most binged TV shows and movies of 2018.

So from that I'm going to give On My Block a go - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7879820/?ref_=nv_sr_1

After that I'll try the Romper Stomper series - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7282970/ - the movies years ago was good.

@SJB If it had a more satisfactory ending, or had gone onto more seasons I may have thought more highly of season 3. The ending just left a bad taste for me.

Penny Dreadful was a bit of an odd one though. They knew it wasn't coming back before finishing making season 3 so it wasn't left completely up in the air. The creators have even said they only ever planned 3 seasons, but with how it ended and all the loose threads I call BS on that. It seems very obvious that the got cancelled and then tried to tie it all up as best they could (but not very successfully).

You'll see what I mean :)

Watching "Bad Blood" on Netflix. 6/10. This is a 'Ho Hum' run of the mill Mafia doco-drama about the Montreal mob boss Vito Rizzuto during the 1980's through to late 2000's. It plods along. Anthony LaPaglia is no Marlon Brando as the crime boss Vito Rizzuto though there is a certain imitation there. (facial puffiness and quiet introspection with lots of waving of hands) Netflix has the first 2017 season of 6 episodes though season two with 8 episodes has just been finished in Nov 18.

Enjoy it with a glass of red and large cigar. cool

Fleabag - 8/10 (BBC iPlayer)

At the urging of my wife, who binged this a few months ago, I finally sat down and watched this.  It was really good - kind of like a NSFW Miranda, but with less silliness.

The star is Phoebe Waller-Bridge who does an excellent job of nudging/winking at the audience with fourth-wall breaking moments that guide us through the back story.  She's an emotionally self-destructive guinea-pig-themed cafe owner, coping with a string of on/off relationships, an emotionally distant father, a neurotic sister, and evil godmother/step mother (played pitch-perfect by the excellent Olivia Colman).  It's perfectly bingeable (6 x 25-min episodes), with season 2 on the way.  Lots of dark humour, and an engaging story arc with a satisfying conclusion to the end of series one.

Last Kingdom series 3 on Netflix.
9/10

Based on Bernard Cornwall books.
Essentially the opposite of Vikings, Saxon kidnapped as child by Vikings and raised by them. Returns as adult to try to reclaim his land, ends up with King Alfred, many battles and political maneuverings.

I see the most recent series of Vikings has just introduced King Alfred so interesting historic overlap.
