k1wi: I'm in the US now

From what I see of America on our local NZ news I wouldn't want to live there.  Seems every second day you have a mass shooting, the job market is really bad, everyone carries guns around, Mexicans are flooding across the border into the country, you have zero privacy with the NSA listening in on everything (but it's ok cause they're stopping the terrorists), you have to put up with mobile phones that are locked to one carrier, the people of America are the fattest in the world and there's a real obesity problem, the health system sucks unless you're rich and can pay for it, etc.

Is this really what it's like?  Probably not, but it's what I see on the news.

Job market is bad.  A lot of people conceal carry, but it's a privillage.  Open carry is allowed in some states.  Media hype on these issues is a key factor.  Remember there were two shootings this year in West Auckland alone and a few in Mt Roskill a year or so back.  Several armed robberies (I've lost count)  It's not like it's limited to the United States.  The open carry states have the lowest crime rates as far as I know.

A good example of media hype would be the stabbing rampage that a student (can't remember exactly) went on with a knife.  He shot one or two people of the eight or so he killed and the media was ALL OVER the fact that he shot someone and pushed gun control the whole way through when majority of the crime was committed with a knife.

MurrayM:Mexicans are flooding across the border into the country, you have zero privacy with the NSA listening in on everything (but it's ok cause they're stopping the terrorists), you have to put up with mobile phones that are locked to one carrier

The whole border issue is becoming a bigger problem.  The US have made major mistakes with their boarder policies and existing policies allow illegals to take advantage of government resources in some cases.

Spying and laws in general are a huge problem for them.  The government wants total control over it's people which means disarming them and spying on them unfortunately.  Most of it under the guise of "National Security" or the "War on Terror".

Funny you mention America being the fattest.  I actually believe Australia holds that record now, haha :)

An average day in the USA......

One bright morning in the middle of the night,
Two dead boys got up to fight.
Back-to-back they faced one another,Drew their swords and shot each other.
One was blind and the other couldn't see,
So they chose a dummy for a referee.
A blind man went to see fair play,
A dumb man went to shout "hooray!"
A deaf policeman heard the noise,And came and killed those two dead boys.
A paralysed donkey walking by,Kicked the copper in the eye,
Sent him through a rubber wall,
Into a dry ditch and drowned them all.
(If you don't believe this lie is true,Ask the blind man -- he saw it too!)

Azzura: It is all a matter of perspective....

Ask someone living in the Syria, Iraq, Israel, or the Gaza Strip, just how bad is it in New Zealand.

Very true.

I am photographing NZ Aid projects overseas at the moment and which MP paid for a flight on the wrong credit card or how many extra cents milk costs are problems the people I have seen would love to be having!

Aaaahhh.... gun laws and America.

Went into a gun shop in Florida once with a couple of mates (as you do). Looking at all the hardware on the walls and asking what use a particularly large and highpowered machine gun would be used for, the guy smiled looked at all and said...

Shooting cans.
Mexicans, Domincans, Puerto Ricans...

Although we're all kaughing by this time we all thought there was a real undertone in the comment.

My brother visited me from California a while ago.

He was walking around our 18 acres and I commented that it needed a lot of work we did not have time to do. "Can't you just get a Mexican in?" was his reply!

I also have a Kiwi friend married to an American. They lived in Arkansas for 8 years then moved back here. When he came back, he had to decide which of his collection of over 300 firearms he was going to bring and which he would leave with his son.....I think he has just over 100 here in NZ. Many are collector pieces rather than users though.

I thought they were for home security? You need 400-1000 rounds per minute for when an army decide to burgle your house.
