So I was thinking are we now forced into buying both .co.nz and .nz

or is it if you buy one you have the option to buy both?

or does it not really matter just buy the .co.nz

opinions and thoughts

or a .com or any of the other new TLDs

if it was me deciding between .co.nz and .nz I think it would depend on the rest of the domain name

Depends on how vital it is to protect the name. Personally I have secured both .nz and .co.nz for a business domain.

If it was a blog/personal project I might not have. All depends really. Its a royal pain in the behind if you run a business and build a strong web site for it, and a competitor comes in and either registers .nz or .co.nz version of your domain.

if you register a .co.nz don't you get a hold on the .nz for a period of time too? "in conflict" etc?

Rappelle: You're not forced in to anything. You can buy the nz, co.nz, both or neither..?

Thanks that was very helpful It points out the importance to articulate what I mean exactly for the benefit of people like yourself.
Some of the answers below will help you understand what I was "getting at"

I think businesses should get both. But you are not 'forced' to buy them. It looks like from the NZ registry stats, that most people are now buying .nz domains, and there was a drop in .co.nz domains. But I still get a lot of clients who would prefer .co.nz instead of .nz for their companies domain, even though I give them the option to buy  a .nz domain.

I believe this is in place until March - that is you get preferential rights to the .nz if you own .co.nz, .org.nz etc.

That only applies to those holding registered domains prior to February this year, that are still maintained.

For those who have PRE, the March 2015 deadline for reservation applies. Registration of a reserved name must be completed by September 2016.

Otherwise, it's business-as-usual.

You should get all the domains you can. The cost is nothing compared with your time and expense in maintaining a web presense so to overlook some of them is just crazy.

When ever it comes up in conversation I suggest that I am not an expert , with that caveat in place I recommended buy everything as well I recommended That they make sure that twitter pintrerst instagram and facebook are availble.

I was quite happy buying the .com .co.uk the .co.nz etc but it just whats the word .. (oh thats right no swearing on this board) ticks me off that I now have to buy another just to save customer confusion its called double dipping in any ones book.

I guess it is cheaper than registering a company then trying to sue the other person for use of your name good luck with that !
