I did have a look and the last thread about this was 9 years old.

I see they are cracking down on window washers at intersections here at CHCH , Garages are complaining of all their squeegees being stolen for use in this etc.

I don't really have a problem with them except when they start getting pushy. It seems the older guys are gone and the kids have taken over the corners demanding money which is not on.

So anybody been overly harassed by these people ??

I dislike them. If I want my window cleaned I'll do it myself.

They are a reason we should be allowed to carry and use tasers.

I've had times before when they're squirted stuff on the window without asking, "cleaned" it, then expected money. Yeah right!
I don't want dish wash soap on my windscreen.

I see they are popping up in Dunedin now on a fairly regular basis. I don't mind as long as they accept I don't need a clean when I wave them off.

I admire enterprise but it is dangerous and its harassment it should be stopped.

Theres a guy who hangs on the QE2/Marshland intersection. He appears to spend more time wearing a fluro vest, clown wig and twirling the brush than approaching people :) And rightfully so he is a lot more popular.

I've seen people waving the guys who are doing it in groups off after not asking to have it done "No, no!" was also said while arms were waving - only to have them swear at her and leave it half done and walk off.

Been stationary when they have verbally abused a car load of youths from across the intersection as they drove off while giving the fingers etc quite clearly too. Rival washer group perhaps?

Also questioned why one of them went to the passenger side of a car after doing it and leaned in while wearing a backback on their front only to take dunno what from/to it into what looked to be the passenger door storage compartment/footwell.

You can stop often outside the 2nd hand sales corner on Ferry road and spot dumped empty bottles or when it has repainted their fenceline after black marker tagging has appeared. Not saying it's linked you have to wonder.

On a personal level I like them as much as the Z attendants that do it without asking permission! When my car is dirty, but evenly dirty, having clean windows and water drips down the side makes it look more crap, and leads to more work to actually clean the WHOLE car :/

If idiots did not give them money they would vanish.

There are a few at almost every major intersection in CHCH i've heard of people getting there cars keyed if they refuse to pay (linwood ensors intersection) and yes they do steal the brushes from petrol stations quite often you will see the petrol station name on the brush.

In wellington, they are normally pushy at cnr Karo drive and Willis.
The ones at Vivian, Cambridge have started back again but arnt as aggressive as the last batch several years ago.

Why should i have to be vigilant to say no and decline the service or risk having retailiation!

There were a bunch around Wellington Hospital last time I was down there. They ran out when the lights stopped traffic and started furiously squirting stuff on windscreens without asking.

Normally I'm in favour of free enterprise, and oppose busybodys and baning things - but this lot were pushy, obnoxious and a safety hazard - plus they didn't want to take no for an answer, and shouted abuse when I waved them off. If I was (say) a fairly frail pensioner I would have felt quite intimidated, and worried they would either trash my car or hit me. It's close to demanding money with menaces.

In this case I would like to see a strong bylaw banning the way they behave, banning performing their activity in the middle of the road when traffic stops, with hefty fines and real enforcement. And getting even tougher on repeat offenders. Something like:

First instance - warning, fined $100
Second Instance - stiffer warning, fined $500
Third instance - a night in the cells.

I've never paid anyone to wash my windscreen, and I never will.

The article that has raised this, has a bylaw. With a $20,000 fine :)
