I'm dogfighting against an 'unbranded' Cisco SPA112 - this beast from hell comes with a ringtone and whatevertones adjustment/emulation for nearly any PBX system in the world. Luckily I found the parameter (~150-200) for the domestic phone system timings, tone frequencies, intervals and voltages to adapt and to get it set-up (and me up-set).

Up to now, it works fine but I fear the remaining Fax adjustments ... have you ever heard about 711a/u Standards?

paulchinnz: Does it turn itself off if you say "No"?

Ha! A bit like when Winnie The Pooh got stuck in Rabbit's door and when asking if there was anyone home, got the reply "No"!

The rat I discovered under my desk this morning. Except it wasn't small at all. It actually set a new record of rat giganticness. It was easily the hugest rat I have ever seen in my room, maybe anywhere. That rat was at least as big as the cat that dispatched it. I am suitably impressed. Her Catness is now sleeping it off on the couch, a well-deserved rest.

Sorry, no photo. I was too grossed out at the time. I just wanted to get rid of the damned thing.

My wife ringing me and informing me that my MiL will be coming for 6 weeks in December/January - and then wondering why I am not thrilled...

LOL. A guy I used to work with absolutely hated his mother in law. When she finally died, I offered him my congratulations instead of my condolences.

I don't hate her.

I just don't want her under my feet for six weeks. A visit is two or three weeks. More than 10% of a year is a bit of an imposition IMV, rather than a visit.

Windows updates that hose my system. I normally try to avoid them but I have been trying to be a good netizen lately. So naturally I started getting repeated BSOD's. On the basis of long experience, I checked the updates, saw two recent ones, including a security update, deleted them one at a time and the BSOD problem is gone. You would think after all this time they could get it right. Or maybe they just don't give a damn.

At least it will be summer time, and can GT can escape to the wild outdoors. Or anywhere outdoors.

Kind of.

What I need to do is figure out how to get live TV of some sort over to the opposite side of the house so that she can sit and vegetate in front of that one instead of the TV in our lounge witch - sorry, Freudian slip - which is outside my office/man cave door...

Recently saw a 40" TV for sale on Trademe. The auction title said "nearly new" and the description said it was 14 months old.

However, the barely literate muppet selling it had included among the photos a shot of the label on the rear of the TV. If you looked carefully the label showed "Date of Manufacture: July 2013". Googling the model number also showed it was a 2013 model.

I pointed out to the seller (via the Questions page) that the TV was actually 5 years old and that he was misleading purchasers. He didn't respond to the question so I reported the listing to Trademe (via the Report This Listing function on their website) where one of the options is 'misleading info by seller' and I explained how/why. Did TM do anything? Nah.

Today's irritation is excessive use of dramatic language in modern 'news' reports.

Everything is "tragic", "amazing", "shocking", "stunning", "vile" etc - such invariably erroneous use of dramatic hyperbole is not only ridiculous, it cheapens the value of the words themselves.

Couldn’t agree more. What also annoys me about this is that it almost takes away the reader’s ‘right’ to react to the news item in their own way - the writer tells you how you should feel about something. I’ll decide whether I find something is vile or shocking thank you very much.

In the same vein, newsreaders on some radio stations (looking at you Newstalk ZB) use overly emotional and dramatic inflections in their speech to indicate to the listener whether they should react to each item with sympathy or shock or amusement or amazement or whatever. I really dislike that - once again I’ll decide how I feel about this, thanks - but I am getting to be a grumpy old bastard.

Another Blu-ray grizzle, this time when the back of the case says "Widescreen 2.40:1 Presentation" but it ends up being the 1.78:1 Imax version.
