I seriously just got asked if there was any signal loss between a 5 m and a 2 m telephone lead? A lead I sell on Trademe

I replied somewhat tongue in cheek

That I am sure there would be but not to many studies have been done on this $5.50 lead!!

I see that reserve has been met, but can you add a buy now?

Will you ship this pick-up-only item to the Chathams?

To my uneducated-in-telephony mind that seemed like a reasonable question... after all, there *are* signal losses over wires, and the longer the wire the more loss.

I'd expect an answer along the lines of "negligible" or .0001dB/m or whatever.

Are you interested in a swap for some rusty gate hinges, or a broken kettle?

I know it seems a silly question to most people here, but for a non technically minded person, I don't see this as an unreasonable thing to ask.

Imagine that that's your mum or dad or aunt or whoever wanting to move the phone a bit further away from where it is, but they've heard you talking about line length and such things, and want to make sure it won't be a problem.

I don't know how the OP answered this, nor the exact question asked, but I'm not a fan of having a laugh at potential clients - it doesn't tend to convert them into actual clients.

I'm heading to Asia in a week on business. MiL arrives 3 days later. I get back in 3 weeks. MiL leaves next day.

I agree that it isn't a silly question for someone who is non technical, and I ahve seen far far more silly questions. Signals in cables can degrade over disatance. eg DC power, HDMI cables . So I hope the OP was kind in their reply.

I don't mind silly questions but the ones where the answer is clearly printed in the listing details (if they bothered to read) annoy the bejesus out of me. I also note that almost without exception members who ask  'silly' questions rarely end up actually buying the item regardless of how *restrained* my answer might be.

This thread sums up nicely why I don't sell anything on TradeMe if I can avoid it.

People ask the dumbest questions.

I remember this time a guy posted on Geekzone "I bought a domain name now what should I do with it?"

Thats me at the moment! I grabbed a free one from the Geekzone promotion (https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=164&topicid=220259) but now I can't decide what I want to do with it.

I guess my issue really is "what should I do first?". I've never really felt the need to buy one so this is the first I've owned.

I wonder if the question asker was thinking about DSL when they asked the question. Some extension leads are good for voice but hopeless for DSL.

Ignoring the fact that you said "no trades" in the auction details, would you like to swap for my bogany old Holden?
