Contagion - Rather depressing movie in a way....just shows how easy and fast things can spread. More of a doco than a "movie"

gzt: Pictures (1981, NZ) 7/10 [...]

Just started watching this again on an HD monitor. The complete lack of image stabilization in the transfer is impossible to ignore to the point of sea-sickness. Not a problem on an older large screen tv.

Went to see Drive last night.  I had read really good things about this movie so I had high hopes for it.

It's about a nameless driver (Ryan Gosling), who works in a garage, does stunt driving for movies on the side, and is a wheelman for hire at night.  He evokes a very stoic, laconic demeanour, and the opening car chase scene provides a nice contrast to the usual car chase fare.  The film overall has a late 80s/early 90s feel to it, and the soundtrack complements this tone nicely.  The story and action are very evenly paced, if anything a little too slow, which emphasises the cool, calm approach of the protagonist.

Overall, I enjoyed this film.  It does take some getting used to, especially if you watch a lot of fast-paced action movies.  This movie is more about the subtle looks between the actors, and reading the underlying tensions.  As noted above, it can be a bit slow.  I found myself focussing too much on how long each character took to respond to a question, which became a bit frustrating, but it's a well shot movie, with good actors and good story.

Well over the last two nights I have watched two movies on the new Reading Cinemas Wellington Titan XC Screen now the updated screen is probably 30 - 40 % bigger than other screens so not IMAX size by far which IMO is a bit of a shame however the quality of the screen is very good and the audio at long last was right on the button. I like my movies loud and the bass to be rmbling where it should and for that it was just as I wanted it to be. THe seating was fantastic very comfortable but by the end of each movie it was rather warm/hot in there. Cant comment on the pricing as both were free screenings (so best price of all hehe)

Now for the movies i saw....

IMMORTALS on the NZ Premiere night and this was in 3d as well. The movie was pretty good as were the fight scenes especially if you liked 300. The downside though if you didn't like 300 you probably won't like the movie. The action scenes were generally very fast paced and you wouldn't feel that bad by watching a few times to actually take in all of the action. The 3D was mostly well done but not overly in your face so for some this will be good others will undoubtedly expect more.

Now the acting was pretty much what you would expect for a movie of this type as in your not going to see any oscar winning performances but overall they were fitting for the movie. Characters were not that easy to pick straight off the bat which made it a little hard (probably just for those who are not familiar with the Mythology of it all) to pick who characters were (basically talking the roles of the gods).

7.5 outta 10

The other movie was

CONTAGION now this movie was not too bad but sort of left thinking of all the other Virus type movies ever made. The acting was good but not great which was odd since the class of those acting in the movie were high. I doubt you would see a Oscar hee either and the ending was a little not as I would of expected which of course is not necessarily a bad thing but for me it seemed a little weak.

So overall the movie is good but not great if it's one you would like to see you would not have to worry to much about whether or not it was at the theatres or at home on Bluray or DVD.

7 outta 10

Another Earth.

Another earth has turned up from another dimension where copies of ourselves live there. This aint no si fi its more a love story about a woman who while driving stares at the earth that can been seen from our skies slams into a car killing the mother & child. Sent to prison gets out still guilt ridden with what she did, posing as a house cleaner goes round and cleans the house of the husband who survived.  It gets better and has a good ending for discussion as there is so many possibilities on what if, based on parallel universes theory.

Super 8

Steven Spielberg all over it, was a good movie really, did feel like a modern E.T.

Although i think it could have been a great movie if they had of used teenagers instead of kids, the story could have been deeper and more intimate i thought.

The Debt

Nice idea for a film. Pity about the execution. I thought anything with Helen Mirren in it was bound to be good. I was wrong. More plot holes than Swiss cheese.

Two and a half stars.

Galaxy S has gone to its new owner. HTC Sensation has gone to its new
owner. Galaxy S3 has gone to its new owner. Now using Galaxy Note 3. Skipping Note 4 I think...

I went to see "in time" this afternoon here in Sydney. Was pretty good movie, had the dr house chick in it playing a 50 year old mum- so hot. I left the theatre feeling the need for more but still satisfied with what I had been given at the same time.

The concept was great, the actors were also great, not much mission impossible action though. But that's alright. I rate this movie 7.5/10.

Three Idiots (2009). Hindi / eng. subtitles

Highest grossing Hindi movie of all time. About three students at an engineering college. Very light hearted all the way through with serious themes like academic pressure, marriage, materialism, self-realisation and pursuit of wealth, all dealt with in over the top bollywood style + at least five songs and fart jokes included. Slow moving for me but entertaining. 170 minutes (!)

Watched The Thing (new version) and Drive this evening and both were quite good I would give both a 7 out of 10.

The Thing I thought was wel done and if you'd not seen the original then it would be certainly worth a watch.

Drive on the other hand although good I just thought the wooden emotionless side of the lead character was just a little too wooden at times for me. The movie was well acted and I can see why other people have talked about it being worth the watch.

Rosa, a short film by Jesus Orellana...  love the Matrix inspired fight scenes, and neo-tokyo backdrop.

Hope Hollywood doesn't pick it up and ruin it like they did with 9 ( which was also originally a short film ).
