So I got my results back today, which confirms what was suspected.

I have a half sister who's 30+ years my senior, and a niece and nephew about my age..  Amazing stuff.

That must be incredible. Congratulations, if that's in order.

@gzt Congratulations are in most definitely in order.

@john Not sure, I can't seem to see that anywhere on Ancestry's DNA matches page.

Wow I had not discovered that either.  My closest match so far is a potential 2nd cousin (haven't mapped out that side of the tree to establish for sure).

Cheers @linux.

My half sister isn't actually in Ancestry, only her daughter and granddaughter, my matches with them are 739 and 327 respectively.

@Lias You should not be making the call she is your possible half sister until she has DNA tested

Put those cM results into DNA painter and this will show possible / most likely placements for the DNA matches in the DNA tree

Hi @Lias

John (@linux) gave me a yell, I moved from geeky database IT nerd in my work environment to DNA geeky genealogist LOL. Now spend my days analysing DNA and dusty docs.

So here goes:

Because of the random nature of the way autosomal DNA is inherited only parent and child relationships are precise amounts of shared DNA (ie 50% from each) Due to the random way DNA recombines you need to triangulate the data to confirm relationships which are not parent child shared DNA.

So one line of test data, aka the 739 and 327cM matches come from the same DNA source (same family line) - you need to find the information for others who share with the 739cM to confirm the relationship aka genetic distance they are to you and the others in that group.

As John has included previously there are a range of possible relationships - the closest match could be the daughter of your first cousin, for instance. Humans are interesting things - you never know what your grandparents got up to before they married - so there can be many reasons for unexpected family to turn up (am living proof of this one LOL)

If you like charts this combined citizen science project by Blaine T Bettinger and Leah LaPerle Larkin is the current must have tool for this work (Thanks to Jonny Perl for building the website to present this data). Is a helpful visual tool were you enter the amount of DNA you share with a match - then with yourself in the Self box and highlighted chart locations are all the places the person with 739cM can sit on your tree.

Shared cM Project and Relationship Possibilities

Looking at the group of DNA matches that 739 shares with you and which lines their DNA has been inherited via will help work this puzzle out.

Hope this helps drop me a pm or find me on facebook if you need more help.

Thanks for taking the time to post @thepatientgenie (Michelle) and Welcome to Geekzone

@Lias Michelle is the person that helped me when I was trying to understand the Ancestry DNA results, If it was not for her I believe I would of thrown it in the to hard basket

I uploaded my Ancestry DNA results to GEDMatch quite a while ago.

I dont really understand anything that it tells me.

But today I got an email from someone claiming to be related and asking me to get in touch, but their description of their ancestry bears absolutely no resemblance to mine.

And like I said, I dont understand the GEDMatch data enough to work out if they are legit or some kind of scam.

Are there any known scams of this nature though?

Life is too short to remove USB safely.
