Hi all,

I own a number of domain names and use one of them exclusively for email. I receive my emails to the catchall account which allows me to use a different email address for everything. I use trademe@domain for trademe, nzpost@domain for nzpost, etc.

I received a survey this week from NZ post asking about the parcel they recently delivered to me on the 9th June - fair enough, everyone likes a bit of feedback.

But this email was addressed to amazon@domain which made me stop and think.

I went through the rubbish and found the packaging from the parcel (ordered from amazon of course).  It had a 2D barcode on the front which I scanned.  It contained all the usual stuff - shipment tracking number, name, postal address..... but also my email address (amazon@domain)

So, is it possible that NZ post are harvesting email addresses by scanning the barcodes on parcels? Or, did amazon really forward my email address onto NZ post?

Most people use the same email address for everything, so would never know where the email address came from.

What do you think of the ethics/privacy issues of this?

It's fairly common for your email address to get passed into the various delivery companies tracking systems so that you can receive updates on delivery status.

As an example, Trademe pass the buyer's email address through to the courier company to send tracking info when the seller uses the Trademe courier booking system.

As for whether they should be sending you further emails, that probably depends on their terms and conditions - it is related to the original service they provided to you, so maybe it's OK.

My business is a commercial account customer of New Zealand Post and Courier Post.

When we prepare the shipping/courier label in E-ship, there is a field to enter a customer's email address and phone number. I enter the email address so the customer receives tracking info and their phone number is printed on the label, should the courier driver need to reach them.

If you have any further enquiries about what your email address is used for, drop me a PM with your name and contact details. I will call my account manager and ask for you.

Yeah I got a feedback survey email too. I didn’t appreciate them using my recipient details to contact me.
