Am idly thinking of getting a laptop from the UK. Might not happen. But anyway, it would be over $1000NZ so I guess I need to fill in that NZCS224 form. Therefore, am wondering  - does timing matter, I can order laptop and then fill in the form and it won't be sitting in customs for 6 months while they get round to checking the form and registering me.

OTOH, if I bought through Amazon (US or UK), I believe they do the import duty thing, therefore its all in the price ? And do I still need to fill in that form ?

If necessary I can do whatever's required myself - I thought I saw something about having to use a broker and hence pay yet more fees for one of those or is that untrue ?

Are you purchasing it for yourself and for personal reasons? If so then nothing to fill in. Just purchase it on the basis that Customs will charge duty on it.When it arrives in NZ and its stopped by Customs - the courier company/Customs will advise you of the charges that need to paid before the item is released.

No forms need to be filled in.

Yes its for me for non business use.

Thanks for the info, that sounds easy enough even for me.

Just have to decide if I'm brave enough to pull the trigger...

Buying something from Amazon is the easiest - they build the fees in so you don't have to do anything.

I decided to get a laptop from Amazon UK. Obviously as soon as they'd shipped it they had a sale here for pretty much the same model at 20% off, but that's pretty typical for me. So Amazon sent it on Wednesday (I think) and then I got a call from UPS late on Friday asking me to fill in that NZCS224 form anyway. They emailed it and I emailed it back. Obviously not a lot has happened over the weekend.
