I don’t think it’s a reasonable idea to consciously order two phones from overseas knowing that you will only accept one and return the other for a refund after trying it. I couldn’t bring myself to do that because it sorta sounds inherently unfair. Just because you might be able to return one phone doesn’t mean you should.

Do your due diligence and research first, then commit to one or the other. Or forget those phones and buy one you can see and hold here before purchasing. Not having full market access to all products is one of the crosses we have to bear, living on remote, small islands at the bottom of the globe.

Easy returns are a core Amazon value proposition. OP isn’t doing anything nefarious- Amazon actively encourage it.

That doesn’t mean that Amazon are right or virtuous. It also doesn’t mean it’s a good idea - in fact Amazon have a lot to answer for.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

What is right or virtuous about buying a phone? This isn't world peace, it's an exchange of value between a buyer and a seller. Neither party are cheating or lying.

I didn’t make any inferences about cheating or lying or nefarious practices. What about the implications of unnecessarily sending stuff halfway around the world and back, the waste of resources, the footprint of all this etc. Given Amazon’s scale, there must be tens or hundreds of thousands of tonnes of stuff being treated like this each year. It’s a pretty entitled way of doing business.

As I said, just because it can be done doesn’t mean it’s a good idea and that it should be done.

That’s exactly what you did. You described it as “inherently unfair”. I’m
not sure to whom it’s unfair but that is how you described it.

Fair point - poor choice of word. Maybe something more like unjustifiable.

I’m not anti-Amazon -  use them quite a lot. Just don’t like this way they operate.
