Why does every organisation that gets hacked tell us that they take security very seriously when obviously they don't?

Can the government back track on its promise to give us all a tax break and instead leave people in their jobs? I wouldn’t mind if we all paid 1% more tax for this to happen. Would it help if enough people wrote to the PM suggesting this to make them reconsider, or am I naive.

Am suddenly finding it very upsetting hearing people worried sick about their survival and finding another job. Have spoken to three breadwinners in the last days and know there are a few thousand more and it’s no longer just words, it’s a harsh reality that I don’t want to see happen.

This thread is for light-hearted stuff. Might be better if you start a new one under off topic or politics and repost this there.

Why do (some) sports commentaries require the commentators to have the headset mike folded out of the way and they have to use a weird mike with a metal plate on top that they shove up their nose while talking?

Must be insanely annoying, every time you want to say something you have to shove the mike up your nose.

It's a standard mike design for that purpose that reduces wind (including from your nose) and background noise.

Ah, so that's what it is. Still, seems weird to be using it in an enclosed, presumably soundproof booth with no wind or outside noise, particularly since most reporting is done with standard types of microphones. Having used headset mikes of the kind in the photo in deafeningly noisy situations (about a metre from a piston engine running at 2,500rpm) it seems crazy that they can't make them work in an enclosed soundproof booth but instead use hundred-year-old technology that must annoy the commentators no end.

Surprisingly, quite a number of commentaries are not done in an enclosed soundproof booth, but a room with the windows wide open - e.g. I've seen this at the Basin Reserve.

We've all heard of Godwin's law.

Is there a name for the phenomenon that all whingy discussions and forum threads will always cycle (see what I did there 😜) back to moans about other people's behaviour in traffic?

Thanks for explaining "plethora".

Some are done in a caravan sans-pants. (I'm looking at you, ACC).

Or all back to the same universal complaint, about courier drivers delivering packages outside of expectations?
