When you start with a fresh bar of soap it doesn't take a lot of rubbing to generate the lather.

As it gets used up more rubbing is required to produce the same amount of lather.

The surface area reduces so there is one obvious reason, but is it also a case that the 'potency' of the soap itself gets less?

I think there are two things at play.

1) The reduction of surface area which is dramatic.

2) The soap absorbs moisture

Because I would prefer to not have to interact with a person when I am not needing them to do anything other than scan the pie and drink that I am carrying.

Faster to go through self-checkout for a small shop (unless one has booze or saffron).

5a) The sodium stearate in the soap reacts with water, particularly hard water containing calcium, to form calcium stearate which impedes lather formation.

5b) The chemical concoctions used in commercially-made soaps as cheaper alternatives to things like glycerine get messed up with use, in particular the surfactants added to create the lather get washed out/oxidise or otherwise degrade with air contact/etc.

Don't stress about the supervisor having to come over and enter their PIN. This is not your fault. You are the customer. It is up to the store to make the self-checkout process so easy to work that it can be done by the (below?) average customer, with no training.

The store/corporation will only pay to change the software when they feel the pain. It costs the store some money every time the supervisor has to come over and enter their PIN due to the ridiculous timeout. Throughput on the self-checkout machines may be so slow that they need to install more machines, or they'll need an extra checkout operator, or they'll need an extra supervisor.

So, be glad that the supervisor has to come over and enter their PIN. The more often it happens, the sooner the stupid timeout will be fixed. And it's keeping that person in a job.

I have had nonsense numbers from over half of my ones - 196v when another says 206 and I am measuring 245 doesn't really inspire confidence. As a result the watts were all totally low. Didn't check the current in great detail.

if you are measuring 245v you have an issue, as it shouldn't be more than 230% +/- 6% for Auckland

If you want anything for accuracy, then you shouldn't be relying on a $20 smart power switch.
