HD Aerial footage of Malibu beachfront and Pacific Palisades

Like others have said - amazing how some buildings remain largely untouched while their neighbours are burned to the ground.

Interesting video on water issues and firefighting:

Never even thought about turning the water off in case of a fire.

Yes. Winds, fences (although Americans dont do fences as we do), shrubs, trees. If the exterior or roof is not wooden, embers cannot grow. Often it may be just luck.

The one that surprised me - most of the Malibu beachfront homes are gone while the homes on the other side of the beachfront road were almost untouched.

Edit: Looking at it again it is the exact opposite in some Malibu beachfront areas. Random.

It's actually covered in the video I posted, the strong Santa Ana winds make it a very selective fire.  He talks about an example he attended where a large house was burned completely to the ground while no surrounding properties were affected.

Edited to add: He also mentions the inevitable conspiracy theories this will spawn.

(b) reduce (to zero) centuries-old fire-suppression/prevention practices,

This.  It's like re-discovering the requirement of consuming the correct diet to stave off scurvy.

That would be a difficult choice. In other fires houses have been saved by sprinkler systems left running after the owner bugged out.

I've already seen one surface, which is a picture of Tom Hanks' largely untouched mansion, surrounded by the devastated neighbours' homes.
The general conspiracy is that he's on the list of Epstein Island offenders and the Devil is looking after his own.

I was frankly blown away by how many people drank that Kool-Aid!

Those turned up in my feed last night. I was pretty shocked, as I actively avoid those things. It was surprising to me, how many likes and comments it had, 10's of thousands.

I'd suggest it was less that, than the winds. The temps of those fires would pretty much make that tiny amount of water evaporate instantly I think.  In a prior fire incident I recall empty swimming pools!

A lot can be explained by chemistry. But people forget it along the way and string on to visible easy explained targets instead. Often down a hole.

Fire can only exist with 3 things. Fuel, oxidiser and heat.

Strong warm wind, you have heat and oxygen in abundance. The only thing missing is fuel. In this case it was Rows of houses that noone could get ahead of.

When then wind is down. You have all three with less verocity. But Water helps take away heat and oxygen.

Retardant takes away the fuel. And so on.

This was more or less the perfect storm for fire. The inability to be able to easily take away part of the triangle with the speed it continued to be fed, the downfall.

There's videos online of all the portable watering systems for fire they got a few years ago. Many with remote start capabilities and 6hrs runtime when fed from pools

Celebs such as ricky lake had one running. But come back to a shell.

You effectively had a firestorm, but with the forced air supplied externally.  There's footage of what looks pretty much like a Bessemer converter ("blast furnace") running which is actually just some structure on fire with 80km/h or whatever winds coming in from one side.

I am really sick of the media focusing on the “celebrities” affected. Those multi-millionaires will just go and live in their holiday homes in Aspen (or where-ever) while their homes are rebuilt. If anybody is really interested in them, they will already be following them on social media.

it's not there houses , it is all there personal effects , photos, family heirlooms etc that puts everybody in the same situation whether you are rich or poor.

Well that's the point isn't it. Celebs are treated like royalty and enjoy privileges waaay above the hoi polloi, they get the best of everything, sometimes for free [see goodie bags] and have money and connections to make things happen [see nepo baby] [see huffman university scandal].

But even celebs can't stop their house burning down. Just like normal people.

A new fire has broken out in the Hollywood hills. Doesn't look good.

Or maybe not. Someone sent me this but it may be an old link. Not clear what the date is.
