So they are saying they want all of NZ to fund this, and suddenly their wording is that it becomes a national stadium for all NZ. They already had hundreds of millions of taxpayer funding to upgrade it for the RWC. Eden park is a dated turd of a ground imo. Wellington went through this over 25 years ago with its own version of Eden park, and decided a waterfront stadium connected to a transport hub was the best solution, and the build cost for the total stadium plus all the red tape was 120ish million funded solely by ratepayers and ticket levies. 25 years later I wonder what it would cost today to build. It has the potential to be used for far more events including being one of the largest ODI ground in NZ. I an guessing Eden parks reconfiguration will mean they may not use it for cricket, although it is a weird shape anyway

I am unsure the value of Eden Park and it's associated land, but if the Government is going to throw 100+M into the pot, then I would have been asking for partial ownership, or at least dissolution of the current board and appointment of at least 2 indepedent board members.

The government currently controls Eden park by way of its ability to appoint five of the nine trustees,[this happened when the government underwrote the upgrade for the 2011 RWC) (there are four others 2 from Auckland Cricket and 2 from Auckland Rugby)

The Government offered its interest to Auckland Council on 2013, but Auckland Council didn't take it up..

Was listening to the CEO talk this morning and he suggested it would be reshapable, to suite larger boundaries for cricket and smaller boundaries for rugby/football etc.

A lot of what he talked about sounded remarkably like snake oil sales, but we'll see.

I agree on your point re the whole thing being done already with the Caketin. Waterfront/transport hub/easy access/more events. Seems a simple plan to me.

If Auckland wants an expensive stadium upgrade they should pay for at least 50% of it, and IMHO 80% of the cost is fair.
As a person living in the south Island I don't mind paying some of the cost (after-all Dunedin & CHCH stadiums had government funding).

But there is now I want my taxes to pay 100% of a staduim that is a luxury.

Plenty of things the goverement nbeeds to spend money of first.

The looming cost of water infrastrucure springs to mind when thinking about helping local goverment.
They ODT TODAY published a report that Dunedin alone is facing a $1,000,000,000 (1 billion) cost for the backlog of work that needs doing.
Even spreading that over 30 years it's 33 million a year for pipes etc.

And that is just one city - lets not talk about wellington!

And to bring this back to the stadium I believe this $110 milion is just for stage one. They will be back for more!

$110mio will at least double with "unforseen" expenses, delays, material shortages etc, by the time the new costs come in, it'll be too late and either the rate payer or the tax payer will be forced to pick up the tab.

As an Aucklander, I 100% agree with you.
BUT - I don't want to pay a single penny towards the white elephant that is Eden Park, with its surrounding suburbs and limited availability for full use, along with all of its other issues.

It's not quite an apples and apples comparison. With Athletic Park, the lease expired after 100 years (or so) and the land returned to its owners so something 'needed to be done'.

Is there the same pressing need to demo Eden Park and move somewhere new?

I don’t recall Athletic park being on 100 year leased ground but as it now been turned into a retirement village and they tend to own their land. I suspect it would have been able to be purchased. It sound a bit like a red herring. Eden park land would be very valuable for residential development and they could built a lot of high density housing on it.

Can you imagine the outcry if this ever came to pass?

It's a neighbourhood with some of the most active and vocal NIMBYs on the planet. Including a certain former Prime Minister.
I just don't see high density housing ever going in here, to be honest - the neighbours probably quite like the fact that the place is deserted most of the time and want it to stay that way.

Either of the stadium proposals should include decent public transport options .

Eden park needs a well lit underground concourse to a fully covered train station . not the current ad-hoc cross mt Eden road and stand around on a wind blown dimly lit train platform that only holds a few dozen people at a time.

Trains every 5 minutes .

Ditto for any waterfront stadium, especially if it's near the old tank farm.

Easy access to public transport , suitable for all weather.

What's the point of an all-weather stadium if you're going to get soaked and be all wet and miserable before any entertainment begins.

The big push to get the public out of cars and into public transport needs to cater for stadiums and large events .

Mt Eden is a premium area, so a premium village would go down very nicely, I should imagine...assuming someone gets to knock down the old heap first.

Terrible neighbours those villages. Old fogeys partying up and getting into all sorts of mischief. At least that's how it looks on the retirement village TV ads.
