I would never buy an F&P appliance, but when I moved into my place it came with a package of F&P kitchen appliances. I am dreading the day the dishwasher dies because I would want to replace it with something else, but it's a single dishdrawer and I highly doubt I could buy anything else that would fit the space.

I really hope I have better luck just swapped out from Bosch to f and P

Brace yourself for utter disappointment.

I am interested in that Bosch Series 6 @dafman. Which model/type?

We got the model SMS6HCI01A for $1,899 on sale at Harveys a week ago. They currently have it listed at $2,199 (so don’t pay that). It’s like our older model but has this amazing cutlery top drawer which is just the best. The 6 series and above are still made in Germany, the lower Bosch models in Turkey. Not sure if quality difference, but … German engineering all day long.

We had a Bosch which we found good but went for another brand on a new house. But after some issues we regret not going for Bosch again and the repair agent we had in also recommended the above Bosch dishwasher models.

I'm amazed so many people have had so many bad experiences with so many brands. I can honestly say I have never, ever had a problem with any brand of dishwasher where the machine was less than 10 years old. In saying that I have excluded where I self-repaired a few with wear and tear issues in that time.

Some things to remember - possibly more for the general population rather than for savvy GZers:

Your dishwasher has filters that need to be cleared regularly

If you load it poorly it will wash poorly. I swear my kids load our dishwasher by pouring in the load in from a bucket. I myself can't help but to load the dishwasher like a Swedish architect.

Appliances do not like being unused for long periods of time, especially those that handle water such as dishwashers and laundry machines. They like to be used regularly.

Evolved designs are so much better than new designs for reliability. The classic example being early model and updated model F&P dish drawers that suffered from corrosion and leaks.

Oh, and don't get me started on folk who never clear the lint filters on their laundry washers and dryers.

Brend: I was just quoted $477 to fix 4 buttons ($23 each) that fell out and a latch to secure the door with call out and labour. The machine cost about $1000 when bought 6 yrs ago and the equivalent today $1300. I had a previous repair costing me $250 (from memory) fornthe bottom spreader.

A friend had a Mitre 10 sourced dishwasher with a faulty start button.

Sounds easy but behind all the buttons was just a membrane contacting tracks on the control board. The board was around $350.

We must have been lucky with our appliances.

I've purchased 3 Dishdrawers, none of them had a problem that required a service call. I did replace some bits on them that were broken due to wear or careless handling - drawer handle, cutlery baskets etc. Easy to get parts and fairly priced I thought.

I've had F&P fridges and washers along the years as well. None of them were ever replaced because they died. We either sold the house with them in (dryer on the wall for example), or replaced them as part of a renovation.

We have mainly Beko appliances in the house we're in now (mainly because of price, and the fact we bought a Beko washing machine 11 years ago that hadn't up until about a month ago missed a beat). I did just replace the door switch on the Beko washer - $30 part and 5 minutes to replace it with the help of a youtube video.

I prefer appliances with buttons labelled in English which rules out most European stuff. W.T.H. does a hieroglyph of bacon rashes or a tee-shirt in the rain mean?

You should read into the fact that someone quoted you to repair a machine that old at all - for any other brand that age they would have laughed at you.

Have you looked at repairing it yourself? For most geeks, F&P are are very repairable and easy to keep going well past their use-by date. A Leather-man (or pliers and a flat-blade) are all tools needed to replace the buttons/button module on a Dish Draw. I just convinced my 70 y.o. father-in-law to have a crack at replacing the front panel on his dish-draw (including buttons) because the handle was falling off, and he got it done (cost $50 in parts) and he was surprised how easy it was and super satisfied to have done it himself.

I would be reluctant to let an older (pre sale of the brand to the Chinese) F&P go.

My experience with F&p fridges and washing machines has been very good. But the dishwasher we had in a weekender wasn’t great, it never dried things properly. So like many brands they do some for products well.

F&P are now owned by Haier so it's really not the same anymore.

Given it's 6 years old, I would see if they'll fix it under CGA.

If not, cut your losses and buy a Bosch.

We replaced our F&P (it was single handedly the worst designed appliance I've used) with a Bosch and it's been solid.

FPA have been owned by Haier for over a decade.
The head office is still in East Tamaki. Their appliances are still designed and prototyped by Kiwi engineers in East Tamaki and Dunedin but are manufactured in Thailand and China in FPA factories.

We got a Miele front loader and it is pretty good once you get used to it. But you have to dry out the rubber door gasket at the front after each wash otherwise it can go mouldy. I don't think much of their dishwashers though. I would definitely go for Bosch instead based on my previous experiences.
