sbiddle:

You won't get VDSL2 - unless of course those high attenuation figures are poor wiring in your home.

Bugger.

I replaced my wiring from the ETP when I got naked DSL on. It's only a 4 metre trip directly to the jack in my cupboard where my gear resides, there's nothing else wired up anywhere so it's the best I can do.

Oh well it requires a move once I get impatient enough.

UFB is available in my street as of Feb 2013. I checked the Chorus site with my address just now and it said:

Network upgrade scheduled:
  • UFB fibre up to 100 Mbps by May-2013

Free install of UFB connection now or possibly expensive install of UFB connection after 2015 (that is when Chorus have agreed to the free installs)

and this from sbiddle
With many installs currently running to $3k + (this is in addition to the ~$3k per house to actually run the fibre past) you're looking at $6k per house to give somebody a UFB connection.

looks like if Fibre doesn't come down my street before 2015, I'll be missing out

I am also not in an area with a date.

I am hoping that by the time they get around to here they have moved on with technology so that there is something greater than 100 megabit available.

Maybe in a few weeks.  We put the order in last week for Telecom but going with Snap now as cheaper.  Still don't expect much out of it, I'm getting a 17Mbps on ADSL2+ right now or 20Mbps obtainable, we're going for Fibre 30.  Haven't called them yet cos I am on a contract don't wanna waste the few weeks of included internet lol. ...

Well then we'd better pray that the government snaps up another deal by then for upgrading to UFB! Wink

"Coming later. Sorry, no date available" from Telecom site. And I live in Howick!!

As a matter of interest, what ever happened to the First Media hybrid fibre-coax network in the Howick-Pakuranga area which was extensively reticulated? We still have the pillar outside our property: they could use it in the meantime assuming it's still owned by Telecom/Chorus.

The fibre part only went as far as a small feeder fibre to the cabinets with a single spliter @ Howick exchange feed from the broadcast hub @ Mayoral Drive Exchange) - not realy big enough to feed FTTH cabinets and the coax part was never designed for Data transmisson unfortunatly.   If I remember correctly some of it was leased out to a chinese langage broadcaster and the rest decomissioned with the amps/spliters removed and parts of the network pulled out.   The subducting (in which the COAXs were installed) could be recycled but its too small to insert the 26way ribbonets into

Ah well I'm happy enough on VDSL for now.

As 99% of the First Media network was directional-drilled into the ground, good luck to the poor contractors trying to pull the coax out.

So close and yet so far Cry Fibre in the middle of my street only.  And now they are moving to other areas to lay it.  Stupid Enable networks.

Already got a UFB line outside my house -- but, no national ISP is providing service to Tauranga (except Orcon who currently have huge issues ).

Tauranga customers connected to Ultrafast fibre have been shafted. It is not network build issues, it is the inability of companies such as Telecom to get their act together.

yep I was part of the Telecom Quality Team trying to look after the copper network when they were chewing it up.
