A village that we are the engineers for in Gisborne, has been BOF for about 2-2.5 years. During this time WorldXchange were looking after BOF customers, and while it was a pain that there was only one choice of ISP / Phone provider, at least there was an option.

As from the 1st of April, WorldXchange are refusing new connections, as the exchange is flagged as UFB, however there is no UFB equipment in there. There are no other ISPs willing to connect down there either.

Chorus have no specific date on when they will install equipment.

So there is literally no way for anyone to get a phone in this village, other than a vodafone or telecom router +SIM option, which I feel is slightly crazy.

Am I missing something here, or is this common?

I wouldn't say it's common (it's the first time I've heard of this) but it's a situation that doeesn't surprise me. This very same issue and the fact it could arise has been discussed a few times on here.

There definitely is UFB equipment in Gisborne exchange.
There are RSPs with handovers for UFB setup in the Gisborne exchange.
We will soon start UFB rollout in central Gisborne, so RSPs are busy configuring platforms & processes needed to provision/support UFB services prior to announcing their launch - not far away.

Thanks for that info.

Hopefully it's sooner rather than later, as there are parts of this particular village where cell signal is marginal at best.

would you be able to take a stab at when we will see ISPs offering services down that way? (Best estimate, wouldn't hold you to it etc etc)
